WhatsApp: tips so that the backup does not take up much space on the cell phone

WhatsApp has never been famous for economizing the space it occupies in a smartphone. Not even talk about the chats themselves, the text itself, which occupies a lot of volume, much more if the user is very prolific when it comes to chatting.

By not having storage servers and only transmission, everything that is received enters directly into the cell phone and the space that apps occupies grows and grows without stopping. This, if you have a phone with enough storage, shouldn’t be too annoying a problem; but when we talk about the cloudof the Backups in said cloud, things do get complicated.

In google driveFor example, you have 15GB for the free version. In iCloud, 5GB. Enough space for many things but when it comes to WhatsApp backup, it may not be that big. Below TechMarkup explains how it can be done so that the backup does not take up much space on the cell phone.

Delete the chats that do not work

As already mentioned, WhatsApp chats take up space. There is no talk of an app that stores things on its servers, so everything is on the phone. Also the text.

And one of the ways to free up space so that the backup is not so heavy is to delete these chats. Not all of them, obviously, just the ones that no longer matter. One can also leave old groups and thus leave them deleted when leaving. All of that will save space.

Ask WhatsApp not to save copies of videos in the cloud

If the person reading this article is someone who receives a lot of videos, or a few and very heavy ones (if there are many and very heavy ones, the problem is greater), the best thing to do is remove them from the WhatsApp backup circuit.

If you want to keep these, you can try uploading them to Youtube either Google Photos privately, for example, or to another network such as Telegram that allows you to use your cloud and thus free WhatsApp.

Preventing WhatsApp from uploading videos is easy:

1. Settings.

2. Chat.

3. Backup.

4. Disable the ‘Include videos’ option.

control downloads

At this point the backup already weighs little. Now what matters is that it stays that way for a long time so you don’t have to clean every two or three, and the best thing to achieve this purpose is to prevent everything you receive from being downloaded without prior notice. You want to know what you store, and WhatsApp allows you to decide.

You just have to imagine that you are in a group of family, friends, work, whatever, but that it is very prolific. All day circulating memes, audios and others. If this is not prevented, WhatsApp will automatically download it so that it can be seen, heard or read from the phone without doing more.

But since all this occupies space that perhaps we do not want to waste, we are going to tell WhatsApp to stop downloading things. To disable the automatic download, follow these steps:

1. Settings.

2. Storage and data.

3. Automatic download.

Does that mean that you will not be able to see anything that comes to you? Not at all. But oneself will have the power to decide in each case what is downloaded and what is not.

From now on you will be able to see a download button on images, videos, documents and others to make them fall from the WhatsApp cloud to the phone. An excellent way to maintain order and cleanliness, and make the weight of the app more manageable for subsequent backups.
