What measures are being taken in social networks for the presidential elections in Colombia

Recently, kuwaione of the most used platforms today in Colombia, decided to work to prevent disinformation related to the presidential election in the country. To do this, the apps has designed a electoral politics that the platform will seek to promote and regulate the behavior of users on the network.

”At Kwai we are aware of the responsibility we have with the millions of active users on our platform, for this reason we signed an alliance with the National Electoral Council to combat disinformation and, recently, we defined a series of rules to carry content and information verified to Colombians in times of elections”, affirmed Gustavo Vargas, Director of Communications and Public Relations of Kwai for Latin America.

In turn, the platform says that this is one of the many initiatives it is working on to benefit users. Its purpose, on this occasion, is to promote democracy and guarantee citizens’ access to truthful information.

Similarly, Vargas affirmed that “in Kwai we have a digital ethical commitment with our users and with Colombians in general, That is why we reiterate the need to combat disinformation and false content, in order to preserve democratic debate in electoral processes.”

What Kwai is doing to moderate fake news during elections

First, Kwai signed an alliance with the National Electoral Council (CNE) of Colombia in which they committed to work together to strengthen the verification of electoral news and data.

With this alliance, processes have been developed that allow publicize official information and help people to distinguish whether content may be ‘fake news’. Likewise, they can also file complaints about possible disinformation through the platform.

To further specify its commitment to the country, the application created a specific algorithm for the presidential elections in Colombia with local keywords to detect videos that have false content.

It should be noted that this strategy was designed specifically for Colombia and has made it possible to implement this reduction honestly and effectively. The social network also announced The Empty Chair as a verifier of authenticity, to identify false content that could spread and misinform voters.

On the other hand, from the company they guarantee that users must look for information from verified profiles. In fact, there are two officially verified organization accounts: the National Registry, @Registraduria, and the National Electoral Council, @cne_colombia.

3. Never replicate information if you are not 100% sure of its veracity

It is human to make mistakes, it is usual for people to share videos with fake news.

The important thing is to apply the previous tips so that you do not become a disseminator of this ‘news’.
