After all, as is the case with other productions, such as Dahmer: An American Cannibalwhich were also successful, the series is inspired by a true crime story.

Starring Naomi Watts, from Goodnight Mommyand Bobby Cannavale, from Mr. robot, the series tells the story of a couple who buy their dream home in New Jersey. However, they start receiving scary letters from a mysterious stalker.

Although the series has some real-life differences – for example, the couple never actually lived in the house – the truth is that the story is much scarier than what is portrayed on the platform. Find out what happened!

Welcome to the Neighborhood: Discover the true story of the Netflix series

In 2014, Maria and Derek Broaddus bought a house in Westfield, New Jersey. But even before the purchase was announced, Derek found the first anonymous letter in the mailbox of his new residence.

The letter read: “You must fill the house with the young blood I asked for. As soon as I know their names, I will call them and draw them to me. I asked the others [ou seja, os moradores anteriores] to bring me young blood.”

According to the author of the letter, the family had been watching the house for a long time and they were dissatisfied with the renovations. He still questioned if Maria and Derek knew the history of the property.

The next letters were received on June 18 and July 18, 2014. According to police records, the letters read “Who will be staying in the rooms facing the street?” I will know as soon as you move in. It’ll help me know who’s in which room so I can plan better.”

These two letters have already been addressed to the couple. Scarier than that, the mysterious stalker even cited the nicknames of Maria and Derek’s children, suggesting he was already close enough to overhear family conversations.

first suspicions

as in Welcome to the Neighborhood, from Netflix, the couple became suspicious of their closest neighbors. However, the police were unable to identify any of the neighbors and it was discovered that the DNA present in the letters was from a woman.

As the investigation came to nothing, Maria and Derek gave up on moving into their new home. They started trying to sell the property, but as they decided to tell potential buyers what had happened, it was difficult to find someone to close the sale.

In 2017, they received a new letter with a more aggressive tone and the mysterious stalker threatened the physical integrity of whoever the new tenant was. A year later, the house was finally sold and, as far as is known, the new residents have not received any letters.

However, to this day, the mystery remains unsolved and no one knows who the stalker was.
