Tommy Dorfman of '13 Reasons Why' Wanted to Transition 'A Lot Sooner'
Tommy Dorfman, actress of 13 Reasons Why, is speaking out about how her Hollywood job has influenced her transition, and how the two haven't always blended.
"I was simply trying to understand [myself] in those early years of working," she stated, saying that the Netflix series 13 Reasons Why was her first genuine professional acting role.
"I think if I hadn't booked that job, I would have transitioned a lot sooner," Dorfman said.
She said that her marriage to longtime boyfriend Peter Zurkuhlen in 2016 was "probably" one of those decisions, and that it made her feel "safe" in Hollywood and in life.
The marriage, she added, "felt like a safe, secure zone that I could carve out for myself in a world that was ever-changing."
She stated that before transitioning, she had spent her entire life feeling as if she didn't fit.

Dorfman had transitioned privately a year before her 2021 interview with Time. She referred to the announcement as a "reintroduction to myself as a woman."
