A reckoning with the former dictator who ruled Chile between 1973 and 1990? the chilean director Pablo Larrain is one of the most respected voices in contemporary auteur cinema thanks to titles like neruda either The cluband one of, let’s say, Hollywood’s favorite biographers as responsible for Jackie (2016), centered on the figure of the first lady Jacqueline Kennedy after the assassination of her husband, John F. Kennedy (and which earned her an Oscar nomination for Natalie Portman), either Spencer (2021), around Lady Di (with a Kristen Stewart who was also a candidate for the statuette). However, his new film shot in Spanish is going to be very, very different and surprising. Is about Count for netflix.
A satire that reimagines in black and white the history of the dictator Augusto Pinochet (jamie vadell), the commander-in-chief of the Chilean army who came to power in a coup that overthrew the democratic government led by Salvador Allende, turning him into a 250 year old vampire who, tired of being remembered as a thief and murderer, decides to die. “I have spent years imagining Pinochet as a vampire, as a being that does not stop circulating through history, through our imagination and through our nightmares. Vampires do not die or disappear, nor do the crimes or thefts of a dictator who did not know justice”Larraín himself explained in a press release.
And the use of black and white is not free because the film is inspired by German expressionism with the Nosferatu of murnau as header reference. As for the cast, in addition to Jaime Vadell, they are Gloria Münchmeyer, Alfredo Castro, Paula Luchsinger and Catherine War.
