Twitter It’s been really crazy for the last few years. And this is not exactly said because of the memes, jokes and controversies that arise in the use that is given to the social network; but of Twitter as a business.

The last years of jack dorsey as CEO, who reappeared in business as Steve Jobs, they fought, in a perpetual struggle between product and profits, for their large outstanding balance. now while Elon Musk expects the completion of a purchase to seem closer and closer, the social network remains especially for those who know with a board of directors and a group unlikely how long it will last.

What seems certain is that Twitter is taking action on some of the points Musk has in mind. The CEO and would-be buyer of Tesla Y SpaceX had a call this week with Twitter employees in which he mentioned his broad view of the platform.

In addition to scaring employees with his vision of remote work, he also says he plans to expand freedom of expression with a slightly more precise formula than the salute to the sun he has devised so far: He made it clear that he would like anyone on Twitter to you can say what you want, but the scope is limited if the content is harmful and, in addition, make Twitter a kind of SuperApp, similar to TikTok either wechata great app China.

This last aspiration has been something that Twitter has been working on for some time with its acquisition, but not so much to promote protocols that promote freedom of expression as in a controlled way. Now, an internal test shows a big step in that direction.

How Elon Musk plans to make Twitter a SuperApp

It must be defined in advance that Twitter has always had a distant relationship with profits. And Musk, if anything seems obvious, it’s that he could do better or worse, but he doesn’t want to lose money. Therefore, it is said that it is intended to improve functionality.

Twitter is the most expensive major social network to be profitable. He hit him in 2018, he did it again in 2019, and in 2020, due to low public due to the pandemic, he is back in the red.

Until now, Twitter has based 90% of its income on advertising and in treatment and license of data used in an anonymized way to analyze consumption. Here’s a graph that makes it quite clear:

As it is said, this goal of being a SuperApp is not new, although it has been boosted by the new CEO Parag Agrawal.

A few months ago, the analyst Scott Galloway already argued that creating a Chinese-style SuperApp, with the aim of creating a product broad and profitable enough to find a buyer for Twitter, he was the next target of his managers after putting Dorsey off the helm.

The objective of this SuperApp is something that has never been achieved outside of Asia. A super app is a single mobile app that provides basic services like chat and payments, as well as a set of third-party “small apps” ranging from stores, restaurants, to government agencies.

The most important is Chinese WeChat, possibly the software most widely used on the planet. On WeChat, users can find a dentist appointment, call a taxi, pay for utilities, and even get a divorce by hiring a lawyer.

An application reaches SuperApp state when adds a host of critical services, which makes it easy to switch between apps, and even if they are not as good as single purpose apps, that app will become your digital life mining system. The more services there are, the less reason to give them up.
