Almost two weeks after its release on the big screen, Top Gun: Maverick It has become the highest grossing premiere of Tom Cruise in his experienced career. The film grossed $86 million this weekend for a US gross of $291.6 million, beating the actor’s previous success in 2005 with the movie War of the Worlds, which racked up $234.3 million overall. All this according to estimates from the marketing research and measurement company Comscore.

The breakthrough comes a week after Top Gun: Maverick will open on May 27 with $153 million, breaking the record for the longest Memorial Day weekend in history. The box office success also marked the biggest domestic box office debut in the United States for Cruise, who reprized his figurative role as Captain Pete.
