“He didn’t want to be the lead. I really had to convince him to be in the movie. He didn’t want to be in it. He thought the project was boring. He only accepted the role when I convinced him that the movie was a big challenge” , said the director of Avatar.

In another interview, this one held for GQ magazine, the artist had already commented on the difficulty of bringing DiCaprio to the epic film. That’s because the actor would have refused to audition for the narrative.

“I had the camera ready to record. Leo didn’t know he was going to audition. He thought it was just a meeting to meet Kate [Winslet]. So I said, ‘OK, let’s go into another room and practice some lines while I record.’ And he said, ‘you mean I’m going to have to read [o roteiro]?’ I said yes’. He said, ‘oh, I don’t read’. I shook his hand and thanked him for coming,” he revealed.

DiCaprio almost sat out of Titanic (again) after this episode. However, Cameron says that the actor gave up after a while and agreed to do a script reading test. “This movie is huge and will take up two years of my life, and you’ll be doing five other things while I’m in post-production. So I’m not going to make a mistake in casting. So either you read it or you don’t get the part,” said the director to the actor.

Luckily, everything worked out in the end and, to this day, Titanic remains one of the greatest films of Leonardo DiCaprio’s career.
