This is what Tom Hanks looks like as Geppetto in the live-action of “Pinocchio”

The official photos are here! Disney shared the first glimpse of Tom Hanks in the role of Geppetto for the live-action film based on the short story Pinocchioby Carlo Collodi. Directed by Robert Zemeckis, this new cinematographic bet mixes the genre of live action with visual effects, all with the purpose of seeing the human characters in the flesh without leaving behind the fantasy that characterizes the wooden protagonist.

The successful precedent of this classic story in the cinema takes us to 1940, the year in which the House of the Mouse premiered the animated film that is also one of its first titles in its filmography. The plot follows the carpenter Gepetto and the wooden doll he named Pinocchio, who later becomes a real boy when a blue fairy proposes to fulfill his wish as long as he is kind, sincere and generous. However, along the way, he will have encounters with people with bad intentions that will influence him and lead him to lie more than once.

In addition to Hanks in the role of the father of Pinocchiothe cast includes Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Jiminy Cricket; Cynthia Erivo like the Blue Fairy; Keegan-Michael Key like honest John; Lorraine Braco as Sofia, the seagull, and Luke Evans like the coachman Zemeckis directed and is also listed as a producer alongside Derek Hogue, Andrew Miano, Chris Weitz and Paul Weitz. Jackie Levine, Jack Rapke, Alexandra Derbyshire and Jeremy Johns are executive producers.

A long-time project at Disney

Disney’s efforts to bring the wooden doll to the big screen began between 2015 and 2017, and it was in this last year that two screenwriters were chosen in charge of the project, Sam Mendes (Cinderella) and Chris Weitz. In 2018, Paul King and Jack Thorne received the call to continue writing the film and practically rewrite Weitz’s script, who assured at the time that his story was still in development and filming would soon take place.

Production really took off in November of that year when it was announced that Tom Hanks would give life to Geppetto, although later speculations pointed out that he would not maintain his interest in the role for long. Robert Zemeckis later replaced Paul King after he stepped down from directing for family reasons, with an entirely new script from Weitz, King and Simon Farnaby.

The live action from Pinocchio will premiere this year exclusively through Disney+ and the official trailer is expected to arrive very soon, in the following months.
