A representative from the US Federal Communications Commission has asked Apple and Google to remove the TikTok app from their App Store and Google Play Store online stores.
In a letter posted on Twitter to Apple CEOs, Tim Cook and from Google, Sundar Pichaithe commissioner, Brendan Carr, writes that Tiktok “features a national security risk because of the amount of data it amasses, combined with the apparent ease with which Beijing is accessing that data.”
Carr assures that Google and Apple have allowed this to Tiktok since their rules “follow a pattern of conduct that facilitates access by Beijing users to the data of those residing in the United States.”
However, a Google representative has declined to appear and discuss Carr’s letter. And tThere are also no statements from representatives of Tiktok or Apple.
“TikTok is not what it appears to be on the surface,” Carr wrote to Cook and Pichai. “It’s not just an app for sharing videos or funny memes. That’s the sheep’s clothing. At its core, TikTok functions as a sophisticated surveillance tool that collects vast amounts of personal and sensitive data.”
TikTok appears to have been collecting information from US users
Tiktok right now is in the hands of the Chinese company ByteDance. Earlier this month, sources reported that based on some 80 audios taken from internal meetings at Tiktok, engineers at ByteDance’s company in China could have accessed user data from the United States between September 2021 and January 2022.
In addition, Tiktok employees in the United States have no way, nor permission, to access the data, and they have to trust the workers of China to do it.
In response to this, a Tiktok representative commented: “We know we are among the most heavily vetted platforms from a security standpoint, and we fight to remove any doubts that may exist regarding US user data. That’s why we hire experts in cyber securityY we are continually working to validate our security standards, bringing in third parties to check and test our defenses.”
The same day this information was leaked, Tiktok announced that “100% of US traffic goes through a route created by Oracle Cloud Infrastructures”, instead of being stored in their own data centers in the United States and Singapore.
Tiktok is on the radar of both the current President, Joe Bidenlike the previous President, donald trump, about privacy and national security.
The Trump administration put a deadline on Tiktok to find a buyer from the United States, or it would be banned in the country, but after several unsuccessful meetings and dialogues with microsoft Y Oraclethe dates have passed and the United States government has not acted on it.
In the case of the Biden team, they have proposed new regulations at the beginning of the year, which would give the United States government greater surveillance capacity over applications that may pose a risk to the country’s national security, as is the case fromTiktok.
