The true meaning of Groot’s last words in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy 3’

In this latest adventure, Groot has to deal with the possible loss of Rocket, his faithful companion since the beginning of the saga, who is seriously injured after Adam Warlock’s attack. Thus, we see him take care of the raccoon while the rest of the guardians try to find a way to save him.

Groot also stars in one of the most surprising scenes in the film when he helps Star Lord (Chris Pratt) to face the men of the High Evolutionary and flee from his ship, jumping into the void and unfolding his wings. He volume 3 brings us to a much more evolved Groot with more skills on the battlefield.

Likewise, he is totally at one with the group and everyone understands his “I am Groot” (“I am Groot”). all except the new Gamora (Zoe Saldana), that he must wait until the end of the film to understand what the arboreal hero is really saying. In the last minutes of Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 3, the protagonists meet at Knowhere and decide to go their separate ways, with Star-Lord announcing that he is returning to Earth, Praying Mantis (Pom Klementieff) leaving in search of his own identity, Nebula (Karen Gillan) and Drax (Dave Bautista) running the skull-shaped planet and Rocket leading the new guardians.

Right at the end of the scene, Groot utters the words “I love you guys” (“I love you guys”), speaking for the first time in a language understandable to the viewer. However, her companions are not surprised to hear her say this. Because? Because, in reality, the character has said “I am Groot”, but the fan, who has accompanied him throughout this journey, is finally able to understand him.

James Gunn has confirmed that this is the meaning of this last sentence pronounced by Groot, a nod to the fans who have supported their heroes throughout all these years.

The director has responded to an article defending this interpretation, stating: “Yes, that’s exactly what it means.” Thus, the character does not say “I love you guys”, but “I am Groot”, but the audience is finally able to understand his language, listening to what he wants to say and not what he says.
