The Shazam of the cinema: find which movie belongs to that dialogue that you can’t get out of your head

Did you remember Heath Ledger walking into a banquet while saying “Good evening, ladies and gentlemen”? to that robert deniro asking him that “Are you talking to me?” to her own reflection? Or that cafeteria chatter that began with the words “Do you want to know what’s going on?” Like A Virgin?” For sure yes. Another thing is (and we say it because it has happened to us) remember which movies, and which scenes, those quotes belong to.

If you’ve ever found yourself in that terrible situation, don’t suffer any more: we present you PlayPhrase, a website whose purpose is to become the film buff equivalent to apps like Shazam. If those allow you to identify the song that is playing by just a few bars, this creation of Evgeny Potapenko it is designed to take you immediately to that movie that is on the tip of your tongue.

Will this initiative have a future? Given that the catalog of films that one can see on this planet is only growing (and even more so at the rate at which the platforms produce), we think so. At the moment, his system is as simple as write the phrase in question in your search engine, and let the scene appear on your screen.

Being a newly created system, PlayPhrase it is not without flaws. After using it for a few minutes, we have noticed a notable absence of classic cinema: if you want to know in which movie it said Humphrey Bogart the “I hope they don’t hang you, doll”, or who released that thing about the ships on fire beyond Orion, better keep trusting your memory and your private collection.

On the other hand, it is clear that making a website like this takes time and money to pay for the rights to the scenes. So full access to PlayPhrase is only available to users who have made a donation via Patreon to its manager.

This is only an embryo, however. Over time, PlayPhrase is likely to become a salvation for the forgetful moviegoers of the world.
