We stopped believing it would happen! After months of teasing and cascading delays caused by the shortage of components, Samsung has just lifted the veil on its new smartphone mid-range: the Galaxy S21 FE 5G.
In accordance with the latest rumors, the South Korean manufacturer has therefore taken advantage of the effervescence surrounding the CES in Las Vegas to formalize the successor to the Galaxy S20 FE.
The little brother of the Galaxy S21 does not lack panache
Fully part of the S21 family, the Galaxy S21 FE 5G is the most affordable model of the lot. But that does not mean that too much concessions will have to be made. 10 months separating its release of the Galaxy S21, S21 + and S21 Ultra, the smartphone still benefits from state-of-the-art components – up to a point.
Let’s recap. The Galaxy S21 FE 5G comes in the form of a 6.4-inch flat Dynamic AMOLED 2X smartphone, capable of displaying Full HD + definition at a maximum frequency of 120 Hz. Samsung promises 240 Hz sampling for fluid interactions. The screen is punched in its center to house a 32-megapixel photo sensor.
In terms of internal watchmaking, the S21 FE 5G relies on the faithful Snapdragon 888, well known to our services. It can be configured with 8 GB of RAM (LPDDR4) and will count up to 256 GB. A 4,500 mAh battery completes the package. Note that it can be recharged up to 25 W wired, and 15 W wireless. Samsung would like to point out, however, that no charger is provided in the box of the smartphone.
Finally, the phone will launch Android 12 with One UI 4 at the helm. Three years of security updates are guaranteed by the manufacturer. The smartphone is also resistant to immersion thanks to its IP68 certification. Two characteristics which, it must be said, are rather rare in the mid-range segment. Many market devices that are more affordable, but with poor software monitoring and zero resistance to external elements.
A dated, but capable photo setup
For the photo, Samsung remains on safe values. In reality, the configuration does not change compared to that of the Galaxy S20 FE.
There is a trio of sensors made up of a 12-megapixel wide-angle (1/176 “; f / 1.8; 1.8 µm), a 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle (1 / 3.0”; f / 2.2; 1.12 µm) and an 8-megapixel telephoto lens (76mm focal length; f / 2.4).
The manufacturer does not expand on the video capabilities of its smartphone, but we can bet without getting too wet on 4K at 60 fps, at least on the main sensor. As said above, the front photo module will have 32 megapixels and offer a field of vision of 80 °.
Finally, note that if the photo configuration does not change, efforts will of course have been made by Samsung to improve its algorithms and provide better quality photos. The contribution of the Snapdragon 888 and its ISP (image signal processor) will also be felt in the processing of the images.
Samsung Galaxy S21 FE 5G: price and availability
You guessed it, Samsung does not plan to release a Galaxy S21 FE in 4G version. We are therefore starting this year on a unique model, which will be available for sale from January 11. Four colors will be available: white, lavender, olive and graphite.
As for the price, nothing has changed compared to last year. In 8 + 128 GB version, the Galaxy S21 FE 5G starts at 759 euros, and climbs to 829 euros for the model with 256 GB of storage. Remember that it is not possible to expand the memory of the smartphone via an SD card; the option of better storage is therefore not a bad idea.
A rather appetizing smartphone therefore, even if its price makes it one of the most expensive in its category. It must be said that the current price of the classic Galaxy S21 is a disservice to this new model: the latter regularly falls below 700 euros during sales periods.
