Sony has launched a new software update for PS5 which will certainly not satisfy users completely.

It is the Japanese company that has finally added the long-awaited support to play with 1440p native resolution via the long-requested HDMI connection. However, those who want to take advantage of this feature will have to sacrifice something equally or more important: variable refresh rate, or VRR.

If any user wonders why, the answer is simple: because 1440p playback on PS5 does not yet include VRR support. It’s also unclear how long it will take for the company to roll it out.

Unfortunately, the platform is not entirely favorable for Sony in this regard, as it took them a long time to bring this technology to the device From the beginning.

What are the specifications to use 1440p resolution on PS5

Don’t get things wrong though, native 1440p support on PS5 is great news. After all, it gives gamers the option to choose a satisfying medium between displaying at 1080p or 4K. As long as if you have a TV or monitor that supports 1440p at 60 and/or 120Hz, of course.

But you can’t ignore that asterisk at the end of the Playstation blog announcement that says: “VRR on PS5 supports 1080p and 4K video output, but not 1440p.” At this point in the game, with all the time users have to wait to take advantage of the variable refresh rate on PlayStation 5, that seems like nonsense.

Don’t forget that Sony turned on VRR support even earlier on many of its HDMI 2.1-compatible TVs than it did on its game consoles.

The latest PS5 update comes with more news

It’s clear that the addition of support for 1440p video output is the highlight of the new PS5 software update. Sony also announced the inclusion of a feature that allows you to search for content Youtube with voice commands.

Of course, voice commands are only available in English and for accounts registered in the United Kingdom and the United States, being an option that will only be available to players from those countries.

Sony also announced that it will gradually add new features to the app. PS-Appyour application for devices iPhone Y Android.

Among them are the possibility of start Remote Play sessions from that appas well as asking a friend share your screen with one to view your game session directly from a mobile device.

As mentioned above, these are subcategories to the expected addition of 1440p support on PS5. It’s a shame that players have to sacrifice VRR support at this resolution, but there’s nothing that can be done about it.

Of course, at least for now. Those who don’t want to grant permission to use variable refresh rates will still be able to play in FullHD or 4K.

Why Sony raised the price of the PlayStation 5

An official statement issued by the Chairman and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, JimRyan, stressed that the price increase was “necessary” given its impact on Sony Interactive Entertainment’s business.

He also said the company’s “top priority” goal is “improve PS5 supply situation so that as many gamers as possible can experience all that PS5 has to offer and what is to come.”

So the reasons why the decision was made were first because of the “high rates of world inflation; second, by adverse trends of different currencies that impact consumers and create pressure in many industries”, explains the company. And third, the shortage of consoles.
