The Marvel Multiverse is insane! What is worth watching before the new part of “Doctor Strange”?

“Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Insanity” promises to be one of the greatest and most important events in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The production is to combine threads from many previous Marvel productions: from the first “Doctor Strange”, through films about X-Men, to the series “Loki”, “What If …?” and “WandaVision”. How do you get the hang of it all? As part of the help, we translate what needs to be watched and recall the most important threads.

In 2016, hardly anyone expected Doctor Strange to become such an important part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The debut of the Supreme Sorcerer on the big screen was quite a standard origin story , in which only special effects could make an impression. Since then, Stephen Strange has gradually gained in importance, and the movie ” Spider-Man: No Way Home ” finally cemented his position as one of the most important Avengers. And it is on the film dedicated to him “Doctor Strange in the multiverse of insanity” that the future of the MCU depends.

Since the beginning of Phase 4 , Marvel has been increasingly flirting with the concept of alternative realities and cloned versions of the same heroes. However, it cannot be said that already 100 percent. we have entered the age of the multiverse. “Loki” and “What If …?” opened the door in that direction, but the MCU movies didn’t rush over the threshold. Even Spider-Man: No Way Home was more of a celebration of Spider-Man’s past than a strong signal for the future. All this makes “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Insanity” a title with an extremely mysterious plot. Since Avengers: Endgame, there hasn’t been a movie in the MCU that we knew so little about before its premiere.

It’s impossible to answer this question with 100% certainty, but a few points can be inferred from the published trailers. You can see that some of the heroes from previous Marvel Cinematic Universe productions will appear there. There will also be a few surprises related to alternative realities and Disney’s access to characters from 20th Century Fox films created over the last 20 years .

Movies and series that must be watched before the premiere of “Doctor Strange in the multiverse of madness”:

  • Doctor Strange
  • Avengers: Infinity War
  • Avengers: End of the game

Doctor Strange

“Doctor Strange” is a fairly standard story about how Stephen Strange became the Supreme Sorcerer and took possession of the Time Stone belonging to the Infinity Stones sought by Thanos. Among the themes presented there, the relationship between the main character and his ex-girlfriend Christine Palmer and the fate of Baron Mordo, who started the hunt for sorcerers on Earth at the end of the first part, seem to be of particular importance for the film “Doctor Strange in the multiverse of insanity”. They will both appear in the new film, and it is also speculated that Rachel McAdams and Chiwetel Ejiofor will additionally play alternate versions of their characters.

Avengers: Infinity War

In Avengers: Infinity War, Dr. Strange made a desperate decision and, thanks to the Time Stone, skimmed through all the alternate realities in the hope of finding a solution to Thanos’ problem. He only found one of them. Unknowingly for the rest of the Avengers, they first had to lose to the Mad Titan, before they managed to change the fate of the world thanks to time travel. It was another instance where Strange toyed with the structure of time and reality. Similar decisions influenced the multiverse and will most likely bring a lot of trouble to the protagonist’s head in the new film.

Avengers: End of the game

Dr. Strange did not play a big role in Avengers: Endgame, but in that movie, we saw the fruits of his plan. Thanos was defeated, but the terrestrial superheroes paid a heavy price for it. Neither Iron Man nor the original Captain America is there anymore. Thor has left the planet in search of a new path, and Hulk’s form is in big question. This made Doctor Strange de facto the only important team member left on Earth after the events of 2023. Therefore, he was the only one left to deal with the new threat. In search of help, Strange will turn to Wanda Maximoff.

WandaVision

“Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Insanity” is the first MCU movie that genuinely demands Disney + knowledge . One of the must-see titles is “WandaVision”. In that production, Scarlet Witch enslaved an American town and made him live in an idyllic world where her beloved Vision still lives. At the end of that production, this illusion completely fell apart.

The twins Billy and Tommy, created by Wanda’s magic, disappear, but in the scene after the credits, the protagonist hears their voices. As a result of those events, Monica Rambeau also gains power and some people speculate that it is she (or a variant of it) that appears in the trailers of “Doctor Strange in the multiverse of madness”. Officially, we don’t know anything about the return of actress Teyonah Parris, who plays her, but the actors who play the twins have made it into the cast. Like Elizabeth Olsen, of course.

Curls

We know about the links between “Loki” and the new “Doctor Strange” from the official source, but at the moment it is impossible to say exactly what the relationship will be. We do not even know if the title character from the series will appear on the big screen in person. Perhaps we will only hear about his activities, perhaps we will see one of his variants. One thing is certain, however – the events of “Loki” were the final blow to the security of the multiverse. The death of the One Who Lives at the hands of Sylvie likely started another phase of the war between the alternate versions of the Conqueror’s Kang. And by the way, she brought additional trouble on Doctor Strange’s head.

What If …?

The whole concept of the animated series “What If …?” hooks on alternative realities and the famous “What If?” That’s why Marvel might as well pull out every single element from Season 1. The most likely link to Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Insanity, however, is fairly clear. It is about two episodes: dedicated to Captain Carter “What If … Captain Carter Were the First Avenger?” and “What If … Doctor Strange Lost His Heart Instead of His Hands?”, in which we learn about the dark fate of another Stephen Strange. This variant directly confessed his love for Christine Palmer, but his beloved dies in a car accident.

The genius surgeon turns to magic and begins a constant journey in time. But no matter how many times he tries to save Christine, the result is always the same. Successive competitions lead him towards more and more dangerous spells and threaten to collapse his world. In the end, “Evil Doctor Strange” faces his second version and wins, but pays a huge price for it. Many viewers think that the Dark Strange seen in the trailer is exactly the variant from the episode “What If …?”. The more it can be suspected of Captain Carter from a prematurely published TV spot.

Spider-Man: No way home

The events of “Spider-Man: No Way Home” will undoubtedly have a strong impact on the plot of the new “Doctor Strange”. The irresponsible decision of the former Supreme Sorcerer to use the spell of oblivion resulted in the destruction of the boundaries between the various universes with SpiderMan. The three versions of Peter Parker and Strange finally managed to stave off the immediate threat, but the negative effects of wrong choices will drag on with the MCU wizard for a long time to come. From the pre-premiere video materials, we can conclude that an organization called the Illuminati decided to take care of his antics .

X-Men: The Past To Come And Logan

The presence of Professor Charles Xavier (played by Patrick Stewart) in “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Insanity” is a secret even worse than the returns of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. This fact has already been confirmed and denied through official channels, but there is really no reason for any doubts. The previously mentioned TV spot confirmed this – Professor X will appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The only question is which Xavier it will be.

The thing is, the founder of the X-Men group has died more than once in the 20th Century Fox films. He was first killed in “X-Men: The Last Stand” to revive in “Wolverin”. Then we got a dark future where mutants became Public Enemy # 1, but at the end of X-Men: The Past To Come, this scenario was reversed by sending Wolverine back to the past. Unfortunately, shortly after, most of the mutants died anyway as a result of Xavier’s epileptic seizure, which unleashed a strong telepathic attack. In 2029 (then the film “Logan”), Professor X, suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, is protected only by Caliban and Wolverine. In the course of the events of the movie, however, Xavier dies once again.

“Logan” director James Mangold says his film takes place within the framework of the future created after X-Men: A Past to Come. Hugh Jackman suggested otherwise, and following his example, some viewers see two different universes here. Perhaps Marvel Studios will take advantage of these inconsistencies, but it might as well give us another version of Xavier. At the moment it is really hard to take any scenario for granted.

X-Men series

For several days, a different, quite crazy theory has been circulating on the Internet. According to her, in “Doctor Strange 2” we will see another Charles Xavier. Not from the 20th Century Fox movies (although played by the same actor), but from the “X-Men” series broadcast in the 1990s . All because the spoiler teaser clearly shows some details identical to this production. It is about the yellow wheelchair used by the series Professor X and the green suit he wears. Maybe it’s not much, but some fans were enough to come to some conclusions. A similar concept makes sense because Disney + is currently making another season of the discussed animation entitled “X-Men ’97” .
