The Golden Globes are betting on adding two categories that have been maligned until now

After numerous changes in the organizational structure of the Golden Globes After the purchase of its rights by DCP and Eldridge Industries, the awards have surprised with the announcement of two new categories for its 81st edition, which will be held on January 7, 2024: film and box office success, and best performance in a comedy stand-up special on television.
The case of movies is the most striking. The films eligible for this new category will be the highest grossers or most viewed of the year that also contribute “creative excellence”as reported this Tuesday by the organization through a statement released by the specialized media Variety.
The aspiring films must have grossed at least 150 million dollars (approximately 142 million euros) since its release, of which 100 million must come from the national box office.
Furthermore, the productions released in digital platforms that may be taken into account for one of the eight nominations must have a number of spectators proportional to the aforementioned incomewhich will be verified by “reliable sources in the sector.”
If they meet the requirements, the chosen titles will also be able to compete in the categories of best dramatic, comedy or musical, animation or non-English language film.
The future of the Golden Globes in 2024
For the second new category of best performance in a stand-up comedy on television, specials broadcast on television, streaming platforms and cable channels that have been released in a recognized medium will be considered. In addition, productions must have a minimum duration of 30 minutes and there will be six nominations.
All nominations will be presented on December 11 and so far it has not been determined which television network will broadcast the gala. The organization had announced that it was already in negotiations with several companies, after Its relationship with NBC will expire at the beginning of this year.
The last Golden Globes ceremony in 2023 marked the return of these awards to television after the non-televised event in 2022, amid controversy over the lack of representationn African American among the members of the defunct Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) and corruption accusations.
