The iPod will continue to be available at the brand’s points of sale until stocks run out, the Cupertino, California firm said.

Rectangular, white, the iPod went on sale more than 20 years ago, in 2001, and quickly achieved significant success. It was the first MP3 player to have a capacity for a thousand songs and autonomy for ten hours of listening. Currently, Apple Music provides access to more than 90 million songs and more than 30,000 playlists.

This MP3 player and iTunes program, also from 2001, profoundly changed the world of music by popularizing legal downloading, at a time when numerous sites allowed you to retrieve movies and songs without paying a penny.

Since its launch, Apple has sold about 450 million iPods. according to the specialized company Loup Ventures, quoted by the New York Times.

This accessory greatly contributed to making the apple firm the technological giant it is today, since the iPod inspired the iPhone.

iPod has been in the product catalog of the Cupertino company for 20 years, but streaming music from Apple Music and devices like iPhone or Apple Watch have ended up relegating it to the background.

It is precisely the integration of these services and products that have led Apple to make the decision to stop manufacturing more iPod models.

The iPod impacted “hundreds of millions of users,” not only in the music industry, which “also redefined how music is discovered, listened to, and shared,” Joswiak said in the announcement.

A little history

When the first iPod was introduced, Steve Jobs envisioned the beginning of a great revolution in the way of consuming content. And so he expressed it during the presentation.

“With iPod, Apple has invented a new category of digital music player that lets you put your entire music collection right in your pocket so you can listen to it wherever you go. With iPod, the experience of listening to music will never be the same”, were the prophetic words of Jobs at the time of the presentation of him.

The most representative characteristics of this device were its storage capacities, since a 5 GB and a 10 GB version were marketed. A very interesting point of its design was the fact that it added a wheel with which it was possible to scroll through the menus and that would be replicated in the vast majority of devices in this family.

Later, the most important redesign that was presented at the iPod Classic category It arrived with the third generation of the players, because in addition to increasing the memory, whose maximum capacity reached 40 GB, it also implemented a touch interface with which it was possible to move through the menus with less effort.

In the fifth generation of iPod classic, which was launched in 2005, there was another relevant redesign, because at that time the dimensions of the device were slimmed down, the size of the screen was increased and even videos could be played. Nevertheless, this version had its best exponent two years later, with the sixth generation, which had a much larger screen and in which longer videos could be played.

The iPod Shuffle and the Nano version

The first version of ipod shuffle It was launched in January 2005 and with it the concept of the portable was taken to the maximum, since it was a device without a screen, it only had music and volume controllers. In addition, a clip was added with which it could be hung on clothing, so it was perfect to combine it with periods of physical activity. Its latest version was released in September 2010.

In 2004, the ipod mini, which had a capacity of 4 GB. In this case, the evolutions were not significant, since it only had a second generation; however, it was instrumental in Apple bringing out the iPod Nano in 2005, which has become one of the most representative devices of the brand and whose first version was sold in capacities of 1, 2, or 4 GB. In addition to music, it had the ability to support photographs.

The most important changes happened for the third generation, which was published in 2007. This time, the screen changed to a square shape, the back was chromed, it had a completely new interface, it added the ability to play videos and it also had a much smaller wheel to scroll through menus.

2010 version It was radically different, because it used a design like the iPod Shuffle, which eliminated functions such as video playback, speaker or cameras, but added a touch screen. For 2012, the long version returned, but its shape was already inspired by the iPhone, since it had a home button and the volume controls were on the sides.

The arrival of the iPod Touch

By 2007, Apple released a music player multi-touch that took the features that made the iPod Classic famous to the limit and enhanced them thanks to the tools that it borrowed from the also recent iPhone. From this, the iPod Touch became one of the most attractive devices for the public that loves the company from Cupertino, California.

It was the first iPod with Wi-Fi. Functionalities such as the Safari browser were integrated into its interface by default, and it even had access to applications such as the iTunes Store and YouTube. Another aspect that was extremely relevant was the increase in its capacity, as it reached 32 GB.

The outstanding differences came for the fourth generation, because a couple of cameras were added to it, a front one, for Face Time calls, and a rear one, which recorded in high definition.

In 2019, Apple surprised with the launch of a new iPod Touch, whose main novelty was the use of an A10 Fusion chip, in a bid to improve the user experience in terms of games.
