The 7 best Marvel and DC superhero movies in 2021

Best Marvel and DC superhero movies

The pandemic year 2020 went down in black letters in the history of cinema, but 2021 attacked with redoubled force. We’ve compiled a list of the 7 best superhero movies based on comic books from Marvel and DC that hit our screens last year.
Adaptations of comic books about superheroes have reigned supreme in Hollywood for a decade and it was no different in 2021. Just like a year earlier, we could turn our nose at the lack of blockbusters, and there was nowhere to watch them, so in the past 12 months, cinemas and/or streaming services hit as many as seven films based on the stories of Marvel and DC. Some fared better and some worse, so I decided to rank them from the most successful to the less successful ones.

1. “Spider-Man: No Way Home” (there can only be three kings)

I have no doubt that the latest adaptation of Spider-Man’s adventures is an outstanding film on many levels, and in its category it is only slightly second to the “Into the Spider-Verse” animation. “Spider-Man: No Way Home” was also appreciated by both Internet users and film critics.

Some viewers may be disturbed by the huge number of references to the production from years ago with other Peter Parkers, but from a fan’s perspective, I really appreciate this love letter to fans signed by Marvel and Sony. At the same time, I’m not surprised that “Spider-Man: No Way Home” earned a lot and broke records.

2. “Zack Snyder’s Justice League” because “Snyder Cut” is a fan success

DC is not doing as well in cinema as Marvel and is a crowning proof of Warner Bros.’s powerlessness. there is a theatrical version of “Justice League”. Unfortunately, we had to wait several years for the release of an unusual directorial version in the form of a non-canonical “Snyder Cut”, and the fans even forced the corporation to admit it was wrong. This nearly four-hour film released on the HBO MAX website was not perfect, but it still outpaced other cinema premieres in 2021.

3. “Shang-Chi and the legend of the 10 rings” due to … poor competition

As in the case of the gold and silver medals for the adaptation of the superhero comic book, I had no doubts as to who should be awarded the award, when choosing bronze – yes. “Shang-Chi and the legend of the 10 rings” was finally selected, but the first Asian superhero in the MCU was ranked so high because the competition was … even weaker. We are dealing here with a fairly generic production that could exist without being related to the MCU.

Right behind the podium in the list of the 7 best DC superhero movies of 2021, I placed the following titles:

  • 4. “Black Widow”;
  • 5. “The Suicide Squad”;
  • 6. “Eternals”;
  • 7. “Venom 2: Carnage”.

I must admit that due to the fact that the mentioned films were more “not” than “hot”, I was composing the list … from the end. “Black Widow” achieved a fairly high position only because of the elimination method. But I had no doubts that the stake should be closed by “Venom 2: Carnage”, which duplicated the mistakes of its predecessor and did not learn any lessons from them.

I had a big problem with the ranking of “Eternals” and “The Suicide Squad”, but after long reflection I found that although the DC movie in 2021 was shot on the same hoof as the two parts of “Guardians of the Galaxy” by James Gunn, yes it could have been a nice change for DC fans. The “Eternals”, on the other hand, turned out to be as correct as the neuter, from which side not to look.

And how do superhero films fare in the eyes of viewers and critics?

Although I do not attach too much importance to the ratings of films on social networking sites, because I do not consider them reliable, I decided to check how they fare on sites such as IMDb (where they are rated by everyone willing) and Rotten Tomatoes (where audience ratings and ratings are aggregated and critics, which are then converted into a percentage).

Top 7 Superhero Movies in 2021 (Marvel, DC) – IMDb

  1. Spider-Man: No Way Home – 8.8 / 10;
  2. Zack Snyder’s Justice League – 8.1 / 10
  3. Shang-Chi and the legend of the 10 rings – 7.5 / 10;
  4. The Suicide Squad – 7.3 / 10;
  5. Eternals – 6.8 / 10;
  6. Black Widow – 6.7 / 10;
  7. Venom 2: Carnage – 6.0 / 10.

This list is almost the same as the one I prepared. IMDb users indicated the same three superhero productions of 2021 as the best, and in the same order. We differ only in the opinion of “Black Widow”, which fell after “The Suicide Squad” and “Eternals”, but the list ends with “Venom 2: Carnage”.

Top 7 Superhero Movies of 2021 (Marvel, DC) – Rotten Tomatoes (Critics)

  1. Spider-Man: No Way Home – 94%;
  2. Shang-Chi and the legend of the 10 rings – 91 percent;
  3. The Suicide Squad – 90 percent;
  4. Black Widow – 79 percent;
  5. Zack Snyder’s Justice League – 71%
  6. Venom 2: Carnage – 58 percent;
  7. Eternals – 47 percent

As for the critics, there is no consensus here between me and them as to the shape of the list. It is true that “Spider-Man: No Way Home” is in first place, but “Justice League” fell to fifth place. In addition, looking at the bottom of the list, “Eternals” outperformed “Venom 2” (and it’s the only two rotten tomatoes).

Top 7 Superhero Movies in 2021 (Marvel, DC) – Rotten Tomatoes (Audiences)

  1. Spider-Man: No Way Home – 98%
  2. Shang-Chi and the legend of the 10 rings – 98 percent
  3. Zack Snyder’s Justice League – 94%
  4. Black Widow – 91 percent
  5. The Suicide Squad – 82 percent
  6. Venom 2: Carnage – 84 percent
  7. Eternals – 78 percent

In the case of Rotten Tomatoes audience votes, the list is yet to be ranked differently. Interestingly, basically the same rating as the new “Spider-Man” has “Shang-Chi” here and it can be considered a draw. Also in this case, the list is closed by “Venom 2: Carnage” on the penultimate position and the coldest-received “Eternals”.
