In the 21st century, movie fans were able to see iconic and memorable works. Successes like Chihiro’s trip and the animated castle stood out for their light and deep tones for all audiences, while works like paprika, Evangelion and Ghost in the Shell navigated through darker human sides, showing more mature projects and the conditions for an anime to explore other territories.

With that in mind, we prepared a list of the top ten from two of the biggest rating aggregators on the internet: Metacritic and IMDd. The selections are essentially restricted to Western productions released in the current century and are evaluated according to the criteria of the sites’ critics, not the audience.
