South Park: creators use ChatGPT to write episode about AI

Apparently, the creators of South ParkTrey Parker, Matt Stone and Brian Graden, had the help of ChatGPT, an AI chatbot from the company OpenAI, to write one of the most recent chapters of the animation, which aired on March 9th.

The episode in question is the fourth of the 26th season of South Park and it’s called “Deep Learning”. In the narrative, we see students at South Park Elementary discover a new digital technology that is able to do their homework without major problems. At the end of the chapter, during the credits, the message appears: “Written by Trey Parker and ChatGPT”.

How are we talking about South Park, the phrase could very well be a joke to “make fun” of ChatGPT and the craze around Artificial Intelligence caused by the OpenaAI platform. However, this is not the case, apparently, since the creators of the classic cartoon explain in the credits, including, that the ChatGPT dubbing was created through Play.ht, another AI resource that generates voices from texts.

At the same time that the situation constitutes a very shrewd move by the creators of South Park, the episode’s narrative raises several controversial and critical discussions involving ChatGPT and other technologies of the genre.
