Shazam 2 debut was worse than Morbius at box office

After all the internal reformulations made in the audiovisual department of DC, with James Gunn and Peter Safran assuming the leadership of the brand’s productions, one of the few films that “survived” the changes carried out by the duo was Shazam! Fury of the Gods (Shazam! Fury of the Gods). The sequel, also directed by David F. Sandberg, was released in theaters last Thursday (16) and, despite being bankrolled by Warner Bros., reached a very negative mark: it was one of the worst premieres of super movies -heroes of recent history.

At first, Shazam 2 it did not have grandiose projections at the box office, however, it managed to surprise negatively by raising even less than imagined. Globally, the film has raised just $65.5 million so far, falling $19.5 million short of the $85 million initially stipulated.

In the United States alone, the production earned US$ 30.5 million, an amount that represents 43% less than that seen in the first film, in 2019, which debuted with US$ 53.5 million.

Losing to Morbius

But the situation is even worse if we compare Shazam 2 to other films of the genre that, in addition to not doing well in theaters, did not please the public very much. In the United States, Sandberg’s film, for example, lost to Morbius (2022), Sony’s work with Jared Leto that was heavily criticized by fans.

The Spider-Man movie took in $39 million at the box office during its debut ($8.5 million more than Gods Fury). Within DC, even Birds of Prey: Harley Quinn and Her Fantabulous Emancipation (2020) fared better than Shazam 2grossing $33 million upon its release.
