Scooby-Doo: Velma is Openly Lesbian in New Animation; Look!

the animation Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo! was released this Tuesday (04) in some countries and shows an important revelation for the franchise. One of the protagonists of the paranormal mystery investigation group, Velma Dinkley, is openly represented as a lesbian.


In a scene that is already circulating on the internet, the detective is delighted with the costume designer Coco Diablo. The passage shows Velma sighing with the hair and clothes worn by Coco and the fact that she likes animals.

Character’s sexual orientation


The portrayal of Velma as a homosexual character isn’t exactly new, as the producers have long hinted at the fact. In 2020, director James Gunn publicly said that she was a lesbian in the initial draft of the script he wrote for the live-action film. Scooby Doofrom 2002.

“The studio kept diluting and diluting it, becoming ambiguous (the filmed version) and then took it out (from the theatrical version) and then she got a boyfriend (in the next movie),” he wrote on Twitter.

Velma Dinkley will win an animated series in which she will be the protagonist. The production will have 10 episodes and Mindy Kaling, from The Office, will voice the nerdy detective. In the animation, which will be aimed at an adult audience and does not yet have a premiere date, Velma will be openly homosexual.
