Samsung would like to launch a completely new type of folding smartphone

Now that the Galaxy S22 series is on the market, the media is interested in the upcoming high-end smartphones from the Korean giant. And since it has decided to end its Galaxy Note range, we are only waiting for the release of the next folding smartphones.

Logically, Samsung should launch a successor to the Galaxy Z Fold 3, and a successor to the Galaxy Z Flip 3. For the moment, no release date has been mentioned. But the company could unveil and then market these devices in August.

And besides, according to new rumors, in addition to a Galaxy Z Fold 4 and a Galaxy Z Flip 4, Samsung could launch a third model, with a completely new format. In any case, this is what is suggested by an article recently published by our colleagues from Android Authority, which relays information from “Galaxy Club”.

According to this source, Samsung is preparing three models, whose code names are B4, Q4 and N4. The B4 and Q4 would be the Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Galaxy Z Fold 4, since the codenames for the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and Galaxy Z Fold 3 were B3 and Q3. As for the “N4” smartphone, it would be a completely new type of foldable device.

What could it be? In addition to a new folding clamshell smartphone and a smartphone/tablet hybrid device, Samsung could for example launch a smartphone that folds in three, or its first smartphone with a rollable screen.

Samsung: it’s time to test new form factors

In any case, in 2021, the Korean giant had given an overview of the types of foldable screens that its subsidiary Samsung Display can produce. And it is possible that this one has decided to exploit one of these concepts on a commercial product in 2022.

It would seem that for this first generation, the “N4” smartphone would be produced in limited quantities. Indeed, since it is a whole new kind of device, Samsung will certainly test the public’s interest in it first. It is also possible that these limitations are related to constraints at the production level.

The timing is ideal, because today Samsung is finally seeing demand for its folding smartphones take off. In 2020, the manufacturer was already seeing signs that the public is increasingly interested in its folding smartphones. And in 2021, he saw his shipments quadruple from the previous year. And for the next few years, Samsung still expects its sales of folding smartphones to increase.

At the same time, competition in the folding smartphone market is getting tougher. Currently, Apple does not offer a foldable iPhone. However, a few Chinese manufacturers, including Oppo and Xiaomi, are already in this market.

And before the end of the year, Google could also launch its first folding smartphone: the Pixel Notepad. This could have a competitive advantage over Samsung’s Galaxy Fold. According to rumors, the Pixel Notepad would indeed cost less.
