Samsung introduces roll-up screen and display with heart rate reader

During the SID Display Week 2023 event held in Los Angeles, Samsung demonstrated some of its new display technologies that may appear in the brand’s upcoming products. Among the highlights is a large roll-up panel, in addition to a screen with an integrated biometric sensor, which goes far beyond just recognizing fingerprints.

12.4 inch roll-up screen

Called Rollable Flex, Samsung’s flexible screen can expand more than five times compared to its original size. With this, the length of the panel goes from 49.9 mm to up to 254.4 mm, forming a display with a diagonal of 12.4 inches.

In addition to being able to be opened completely, the flexible construction allows for other possibilities of use, such as the “O” shape for viewing from all sides, for example.

The brand also took the opportunity to show again its OLED Flex In & Out technology, which had already been shown at previous conventions. It allows mobile devices to be bent in or out up to 360 degrees.

In turn, the Flex Hybrid technology combines folding and sliding solutions at the same time to increase the possibilities of using the devices. The Flex Solo, meanwhile, is a 13-inch panel that expands to 17 inches — so sizes comparable to notebooks.

Screen with integrated biometric sensor is also featured

Another novelty presented by Samsung at the event is the Sensor OLED Display. As the name might suggest, it has integrated sensors for detecting biometric data, among other functions.

In practice, this means that cell phone manufacturers and other devices would not need to install fingerprint sensors below the screen, something that often happens in current devices. Instead, organic light-emitting photodiode (OPD) sensors are built directly into the panel.

In addition to enabling one-touch authentication, the solution can measure information such as heart rate, blood pressure and even stress levels.

The components necessary for the measurements are built directly into each pixel, and therefore it is possible to obtain more information when placing multiple fingers simultaneously.

In the same area, Samsung also showed a panel for mobile devices with a refresh rate of 240 Hz, showing that we may have important advances especially for gamers in the coming years.

Samsung has not yet confirmed when these technologies will reach the brand’s devices, but there is an expectation around the possible debut in the Galaxy S line. distant.

In addition to its new screen solutions, the company prepared other attractions at the conference. Exhibitions are made with QD-OLED screens that won “Display of the Year” awards, and the brand even positioned an OLED Finder totem with extra information about the technology.
