Samsung plans to launch the third generation of smartphones with a foldable display in August 2021. The manufacturer is also relying on making the devices more suitable for the masses. Now it has been announced that the Galaxy Z Fold3 and the Galaxy Z Flip3 should be “waterproof”.

Like the most well-informed US blogger and smartphone specialist Max Weinbach announced on his Twitter account, the two new top smartphones from Samsung will come with an IPX8 certification despite the horizontally or vertically foldable displays. This would make them much more resilient than their predecessors, some of which were somewhat fragile.

An IPX8 certification would mean that Samsung has found a way to provide the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 and Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3 with a waterproof case. According to the IP scale, IPX8 means that the devices are not certified against the ingress of dust, but against water. Specifically, they would be able to be permanently submerged deeper than one meter without being damaged.

Officially waterproof, but …

Of course, there are some restrictions, because the IP code leaves the exact definition to the respective device manufacturer, so that Samsung can advertise its devices as IPX8-certified and thus waterproof, but can add various “asterisks” to allow this information with small print relativize. It is conceivable that IPX8 certification, for example, only applies to clear freshwater.

Nevertheless, an IPX8 certification for the two new smartphones with foldable OLED displays is quite impressive. How Samsung gets the devices waterproof is open. It would be conceivable, however, that the housings were designed in such a way that water can penetrate, but thanks to special coatings and the like, the inner workings are not damaged.

The first generation of the Galaxy Z Fold had some problems with hardware defects because small stones or grains of dust settled and could cause a failure after a short time. The folding displays from Samsung are now considered to be relatively durable. The official presentation of the two new foldable top smartphones from Samsung will probably take place on August 11, 2021.
