Samsung announces its LPDDR5X DRAM for smartphones, up to 1.3x faster

Samsung LPDDR5X DRAM

In a press release, Samsung officially presents its LPDDR5X DRAM. This memory is both more efficient and less energy-intensive than LPDDR5.

LPDDR5X DRAM is intended for mobile devices and more generally for embedded computing to meet the needs of 5G, IA, and edge applications.

Throughput increased by 30% compared to that of the LPDDR5

The Korean firm indicates that its LPDDR5X memory (Low Power Double Data Rate 5X) takes the form of 16 Gb (approximately 2 Gb) chips engraved at 14 nm. They can be assembled into 64 GB memory modules. These are the first solutions of this kind. Moreover, Samsung had already been a pioneer for LPDDR5 DRAM with its 8 Gb chips.

In terms of performance, Samsung LPDDR5X DRAM offers a transfer speed 1.3 times higher and consumes 20% less power than LPDDR5. In the figures, the speed is 8.5 Gbit / s. This is indeed a value 30% higher than that of the LPDDR5 which caps at 6.4 Gbit / s. To go back even further, know that the LPDDR4X is limited to 4.2 Gbit / s.

DRAM for premium smartphones, but not only

Sang-Joon Hwang, Senior Vice President and Head of DRAM Design Team at Samsung Electronics, said: “ In recent years, hyperconnected market segments such as AI, augmented reality (AR) and metaverse, which rely on extremely fast processing of large-scale data, have grown rapidly. Our LPDDR5X will expand the use of high-performance, low-power memory beyond smartphones and bring new capabilities to AI-based edge applications like servers and even automobiles. “.
