The then 21-year-old actor shot his mother, Barbara Waite, in the head while she was playing the piano in their home. After the murder, he lit candles, said prayers and left the house planning to kill more people. According to him, the plan was to kill Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada.

In their car they had three loaded guns, 12 Molotov cocktails, camping supplies and a map to the minister’s house. Prosecutors in the case filed psychiatric reports that claimed he killed his mother to spare her from seeing the crimes he would commit. That same night, however, he confessed everything to the police.

At the trial, he apologized to the family and said his mother didn’t deserve it. “She was a caring, compassionate and loving person. She did nothing to deserve what I did to her,” he declared. “In the face of something so horrible, apologizing almost seems pointless. But from every fiber of my being, I’m sorry,” he told family members present.

Grantham is known for his role in the film diary of a Wimpy Kid and for appearances in the series riverdalefrom The CW.
