Pete Lau, CEO of OnePlus, confirmed last Friday (12) that he is working on the launch of the brand’s first foldable cell phone. The revelation came just two days after the launch of the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4, the new generation of foldables from Samsung — manufacturer that leads this segment by hand.
On his Twitter, the executive published pictures of a metal hinge mechanism which gives the flexibility of foldable phones, giving strength to rumors dating back to 2021 — but this time, the Chinese manufacturer seems to be seriously focused on the project.
Several foldable phones were announced recently, including the Xiaomi Mix Fold 2, OPPO Find N, Huawei Mate Xs 2 and Motorola Razr 2022, showing that manufacturers are starting to invest heavily in the aspect that accumulated large sales volume in 2021. OnePlus is finally embracing the idea and soon can announce its first model.
Previous rumors claim that OnePlus can continue to enjoy its “brotherhood” with OPPO and simply launch your collapsible as a renamed version of OPPO Find N. The only differences would be the branding on the back of the phone, its global availability, and the use of the OxygenOS user interface instead of ColorOS.
It is not the first time that brands have created reused projects. In June, documents from the US telecommunications regulator, the FCC, confirmed that OnePlus is only renaming smartphones from the OPPO catalog, using the same solutions from the manufacturer that will soon land in Europe.
If these rumors are true, we can deduce that the OnePlus folding cell phone will be a top of the line equipped with advanced mechanisms and ergonomic design that guarantee its durability and comfort during prolonged use.
OnePlus has not yet confirmed other information, pricing and release date of the device. On a related note, OPPO may introduce its first foldable “flip” design soon to compete for popularity with the Galaxy Z Flip 4.
