The EctoLife Artificial Uterus Centerbased in berlin, Germanyunveiled a plan to create babies through a genetic editing tool combined with artificial intelligence that allows them to give life to children free of diseases.

The creator of the project is the scientific communicator Hashem Al-Ghaili and it intends that the minors are gestated in synthetic uteruses so that the parents select the highest quality and ‘genetically superior’ embryos so that they avoid spontaneous abortions.

“This would create the opportunity to fix any inherited genetic diseases that are part of the family history so that the baby and their offspring live a healthy and comfortable life, free of genetic diseases,” he said.

The gene editing tool is called CRISPR-Cas 9 and allows the embryo to be modified before implanting it in the artificial uterus, a technology that has already been used in the past, specifically to correct “a condition known as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, which causes the heart muscle to thicken.”

This project will also implement artificial intelligence which will allow each baby to be given the necessary nutrients for its gestation and to monitor its growth to alert of any anomaly that is affecting normal development.

The plan also includes 360-degree cameras so that parents know and experience what their child sees and hears during their nine months of pregnancy. They will see all this through live broadcasts from their mobile devices, as Science and Stuff magazine comments.

In addition to the cameras, the artificial wombs will have speakers so that the babies hear the voices of their parents and get used to them, although they can also be used to play music and the sounds that they would hear in the familiar environment in which they would be if they were. in his mother’s body.

“This would be an option for certain parents who cannot conceive children naturally. But as it is refined and tested, it will become an option for all future parents, easily linking with in vitro fertilization, genetic screening, embryo selection, genetic potential modeling and genetic engineering,” he said. Al-Ghaili.

The project would offer parents the possibility of leaving their child at the research center or taking the artificial uterus home, adapting a place and installing batteries and different technology that allow compliance with the process.

An alternative against infertility and miscarriages

Although this is a plan that is under development, it would be an important option for a large number of people in the world who cannot have children or who, for different reasons, including genetics, have lost their babies during the gestation process.

These cases are more common than is believed. According to World Health Organization, About 15% of couples of reproductive age worldwide are affected by infertility.

Furthermore, according to the magazine The Lancet each year in the world there are almost 23 million abortions worldwide, only taking into account the cases in which the woman knows that she is pregnant, since there is a percentage that occurs during the first 5 weeks of management and it is very difficult to determine that number in total.
