OSOM: why is this brand of smartphones being talked about?

And this brand is talking about it, it’s because it’s a new challenger for Apple and Samsung. OSOM also has a chance of succeeding since the team behind this new brand is the one that designed Essential’s smartphone.

As a reminder, Essential was a smartphone brand founded by Andy Rubin, the father of the Android operating system. The brand released a single smartphone, the PH1, before going out of business.

But this smartphone has made a mark on the industry thanks to an interesting technical data sheet, a neat design, and, above all, an operating system that has been supported for years. Unfortunately, Essential did not break through.

On the other hand, its engineers and designers want to try their luck again, with the new OSOM brand. And recently, she decided to share some information about her first smartphone: the OSOM OV1.

It will almost be the successor to the Essential PH1 smartphone. On the design side, moreover, certain elements of the OSOM OV1 can recall that of the Essential smartphone. As The Verge reports, the device was not designed to evoke Essential. However, given that the two devices were designed by the same team, it is logical that we can see similarities between the OSOM OV1 and the Essential PH1.

OSOM: an iPhone-style design on an Android smartphone?

OSOM has already shared images of its future smartphone. And when it comes to design, the brand intends to stand out from other Android smartphone makers.

First, there is the minimalist look of the smartphone. But besides that, the choice of materials used could also make the OSOM OV1 an exceptional Android device.

Indeed, while the other brands (with the exception of Apple) use aluminum frames, OSOM chooses stainless steel (although this can weigh down the smartphone and therefore have an impact on the size of the battery). The physical buttons, as well as the camera bump are made of titanium. The back is made of zirconium ceramic. And on the front, we will have a Gorilla Glass Victus glass screen.

A high-end smartphone with a focus on privacy

OSOM has not yet shared the full specs of the OV1 smartphone. Nevertheless, we know that the device will use a Snapdragon 8 series chip, which will allow performance worthy of a flagship. We also know that this device will have two sensors on the back: a 48-megapixel sensor with a second 12-megapixel sensor. And on the front, there will be a 16-megapixel sensor.

The screen will be OLED type. But the resolution and size of this screen are not yet specified. On the other hand, we know that the OSOM OV1 will have 5G (but only 5G sub-6), an NFC module, as well as an Ultra Wideband chip.

For the moment, the manufacturer is content to indicate that the battery of its smartphone will be able to last a whole day in normal use, and that the load will have an acceptable speed.

To stand out, OSOM should provide a few privacy protection software features. Indeed, on its site, the brand indicates that it will make confidentiality its hobbyhorse.

Moreover, the OSOM OV1 will be delivered with a rather special USB-C cable. This is equipped with a switch to disable the data transfer wires. Thus, you can charge your smartphone on public terminals, for example, with the assurance that this connection will not be used to suck data.

Note also that compared to its initial schedule, OSOM had to postpone the release of its OV1 smartphone, because the company decided to use a new chip. The release of this device is now scheduled for the last quarter of 2022. The price will be under $1,000 in the United States.
