Among the nominees are films by established filmmakers such as Steven Spielberg, James Cameron and Guillermo del Toro, in addition to the presence of new talent and two non-English language films in the main category.

Her performance was highly praised by both Marvel fans and specialized critics, highlighting all the building nuances of her character.

In the plot, after the death of T’Challa (played by Chadwick Boseman), Wakanda finds itself in the midst of a new threat. And now, without a hero to fight for the nation, the vulnerability of this technological superpower is visible.

Red: Growing up is a Beast

For yet another year, Pixar is among the nominees for Best Animated Feature Film. Winner of several awards in this category, the last of which in 2021 with Soul, the candidate for the time is Red: Growing up is a Beast (turning redin the original).

Directed by Domee Shi, the production tells the story of Mei, a 13-year-old girl, who goes through a very turbulent period in the life of any teenager: puberty. Amid several changes, when she feels stressed, Mei turns into a giant red panda, making everything even more complex in her routine.

The Pupil

Not only feature films lives the Oscar. Among the categories of shorts, there is The Pupil, nominated for Best Free-Action (or Live-Action) Short Film. About 37 minutes long, the Italian film, directed by filmmaker Alice Rohrwacher and produced by Alfonso Cuarón, tells the story of several children kept in a boarding school for girls during the Second World War.

Among them is Serafina (Melissa Falasconi), a rebellious young woman who wants to free herself during the Christmas celebrations in the place, something that is seen with bad eyes by the nuns who watch over the girls, especially Mother Superior Fioralba (Alba Rohrwacher).

Volcanoes: The Tragedy of Katia and Maurice Krafft

Among this year’s nominees in the category of Best Documentary in a Feature Film, it is necessary to highlight one of the most interesting works of the season. Volcanoes: The Tragedy of Katia and Maurice Krafft (fire of lovein the original), as well as its subtitle delivers, tells a very impactful episode that, unfortunately, took the lives of French volcanologist researchers Katia and Maurice Krafft.

The National Geographic production is built from archival footage, organized in a dramatic line by filmmaker Sara Dosa, with narration by filmmaker and writer Miranda July. Set in 1991, the feature film shows how scholars headed to Mount Unzen, Japan, being taken by surprise by its eruption.

Insherin’s Banshees

To close the list, it is necessary to talk about a feature film that is not yet officially available, but that will soon arrive in the Star Plus catalogue. Still showing in theaters in some cities, Insherin’s Banshees is the film with the most nominations among all the productions recommended here.

They are: Best Picture, Best Actor (for Colin Farrell), Best Supporting Actor (for Berry Keoghan and Brendan Gleeson), Best Director (for Martin McDonagh), Best Supporting Actress (for Kerry Condon), Best Original Screenplay (for Martin McDonagh ), Best Score (for Carter Burwell) and Best Editing (for Mikkel EG Nielsen).

Set on the fictional island of Inisherin, located in Ireland during the 1920s, it tells the story of Pádraic (Farrell), who one day discovers that his best friend, Colm (Gleeson), no longer wants to be his friend. From there, the latter threatens Pádraic to leave, if he will not tear off his fingers with scissors.

The 2023 Oscars take place on March 12 of this year, being hosted once again by host Jimmy Kimmel. In Brazil, the broadcast will take place in real time through HBO Max.
