Memoji improvements

Despite the marathon presentation at this summer’s WWDC event, there are so many new features in iOS 16 that quite a few were left out. Some were covered in the iPad OS and Mac OS presentation; improvements to Mail, coming to all platforms. But here are 12 lesser-known iOS 16 news you should be aware of.

Expose and copy objects

In the Photos app, you can easily expose and copy an object. Long press the object or person you want to expose and you will see how it is released and exposed from the surroundings. Keep tapping and then open the app you want to paste the image into.

Support for Switch controllers (and others)

iOS 16 officially supports several new bluetooth controllers, including Nintendo Switch Joy-Cons and Pro Controller, now you have even more options when playing games. This support is also available in TV OS and Ipad OS.

Locked folders in Pictures

As an added privacy measure, the Hidden and Recently Deleted folders in Photos are locked by default, so that no one accidentally stumbles upon them. You use Face ID, Touch ID or password to access them.

Duplicate detection of photos

In the Photos app’s Album view, there is a new feature that automatically finds identical images by combining captions, keywords and favorites to find the highest quality duplicate image. Once that’s done, you can choose to merge the photos and keep your photo library tidy.

Notifications on the iOS 16 lock screen can be customized.

Change lock screen layout

When Apple showed off its new lock screen, it only showed notifications, which were in a stack, but that’s not the only option. You can set it to show a list, if you want to see them cover your lock screen, like before, or as a banner, with a counter, if you want to keep it tidy.

Web Push Notifications

During the event, Apple said that Safari in Mac OS Ventura will support web push notifications. It will also be released for IOS and Ipad OS, but not this year. Apple lists the feature as “available in 2023” for their mobile operating system.

More offline Siri features

Speaking of Siri, if you have an iPhone 12 or later, it will do even more offline than before. Most home control features and voicemail work without sending anything to Apple. You obviously need a network connection to communicate with your Homekit hub, but all data management never leaves your iPhone or local network.

Hang up with Siri

Speaking of Siri, now you can finally hang up a phone call or FaceTime call with Siri. It’s strange that it took so long. Sure, the other person will hear you say it, but whatever.

The camera in the iPhone 13

You will be able to take better photos in IOS 16 without having to upgrade your iPhone.

If you have an Iphone 13 or Iphone 13 Pro, you get better bokeh (blurred background). In portrait mode, objects in the foreground – in front of the subject – will have a blurred effect. And in movie mode, the depth of field effect has better precision around things like hair and glasses.

Pimp more Apple apps

Apple has allowed us to delete some of their pre-installed apps since iOS 10 and now adds three more in iOS 16: Find, Clock and Health. However, Apple says that some built-in Find features still work and some Apple Watch features may be affected.

Haptic keyboard support

The built-in iOS 16 keyboard will now have a haptic feedback option when typing, so tapping the screen will feel more natural. Although unfortunately the function does not seem to appear on the iPad (yet).

Improved iCloud+

The Hide My Email and Custom Email Domains features in iCloud+ will be more useful in iOS 16. Hide My Email is integrated directly into Quicktype suggestions, and should be available in third-party apps. Your custom domain can also be shared with people outside of your family sharing group. From the iCloud Mail settings, you can purchase a new domain or enable “catch-all aliases”.

Memoji improvements

What can we say, we like Memoji, which now gets a number of meaningful improvements in iOS 16 (and Ipad OS 16 and Mac OS 13). There are more stickers and poses, all of which can be used for your contact picture. There are 17 new and updated hairstyles, more headgear, more noses and more neutral lip colors. It should be easier than ever to make your Memoji match your look and style.

Biggest news in iOS 16

As expected, iOS 16 was the first news presented by Craig Federighi at Apple’s WWDC event.

Among the news this time, one can be mentioned brand new lock screen, something described as the biggest change to date. In addition to greater possibility to change appearance, fonts, colors and background, it is also possible to add important information such as the calendar, the weather, music and so on. It is also possible to customize which notifications should be displayed on the lock screen and choose between several sets of lock screens.

Furthermore, we are offered new functions in Messages, among other things, it will finally be possible to edit or undo sent messages. In addition, Shareplay is added to Messages, making it easier to share movies and music with family and friends. Apple is also taking the opportunity to improve the ability to use the dictation function in Messages.

Another novelty is that the translation function Live Text now works with video, something that many users will appreciate.

Do you use Family sharing you now get extended opportunities to decide who will be allowed to share what.

In addition, it will be easier to share pictures with the rest of the family via Shared iCloud Photo Library (Icloud Shared Photo Library), but this function is delayed until an upcoming update.

Furthermore, we are offered a number of news regarding Apple Wallet (Wallet) and Apple Pay, but at the time of writing it is unclear which news will come to Sweden. In the same way, it is the case with most of the news in Kartor, here Sweden is not found on the list of the 11 countries that can take part in the improvements. Apple also showed improvements to Sportskit, but even here Sweden is not included.

Next, we got a preview of the new security and privacy features, including Safety Check which keeps track of apps, messages and so on. This year, Apple has invested in allowing users to quickly withdraw various permissions, restore logins and other things shared with another person, among other things to help victims of stalking and other destructive elements in close relationships.

Matter

Apple also expressed its support for the upcoming smart home standard Matter which is supported by several large companies and competitors and allows gadgets to communicate with each other regardless of which protocol or ecosystem has previously been the basis of the functionality. They also take the opportunity to refresh the Home app with easier installations, more categories and a cleaner layout.
