A romantic comedy in which the leads don’t actually kiss? This seems to have been the case in Certain people, movie from Netflix. In the plot, we follow two young people in love (played by Jonah Hill and Lauren London) who need to meet each other’s families and navigate through the various conflicts and dramas arising from this encounter. The film also has comedian Eddie Murphy, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Nia Long and David Duchovny in the cast.

The controversy surrounding the main characters of Certain people came about after artist Andrew Schulz, who participated in the Netflix film, revealed in a podcast that Hill and London “didn’t even kiss” during the narrative. When joking about the two not making a good couple, Schulz confirmed that the chemistry between the two did not even yield a real kiss during the final sequence of the production, requiring the use of computer graphics (CGI) for the realization of the romantic moment.
Below, you can see an excerpt from the scene, which is gaining space on the internet after the controversy. The video below also includes the interview excerpt in which Schulz talks about using CGI to create the film’s final kiss.
“There’s this hilarious thing – I don’t even know if I should share this – but in the final scene, they don’t even kiss. It’s CGI. Honest to God,” said the actor while talking about the film. He also said that he was present at the recordings at the end of the work, when the characters of Hill and London agree and get married, and that he was confused, thinking that the scene would be cut later (before the kiss, in this case).

“I’m there and I’m watching the wedding, and I see they’re going to kiss and their faces stop in the distance, and I’m like, ‘I wonder how they’re going to do that in the movie, they’re probably going to cut the scene right here’. But in the movie, you can see their faces get closer and blend a little bit because of a fake kiss.”
The actor’s statements, of course, generated a certain controversy and some discussions. Did the stars not like each other? What would be the reason for using CGI? However, Jonah Hill, Lauren London and Netflix have not yet commented on the case.
