My Policeman: Actor comments on gay sex scenes with Harry Styles

In an interview with Rolling Stones, David Dawson (Peaky Blinders, The Last Kingdom) gave more details about his performance in the film My Policeman, Prime Video’s new dramatic bet. The star’s lines express how the intimacy scenes of the love triangle were conceived and reveal more curiosities of the new challenges faced by the actor to record his first moment of gay sex in a larger scale production.

According to Dawson, Harry Styles (Do not worry, dear) was “very collaborative” while filming intimate scenes. In the film, celebrities play Patrick Hazelwood and Tom Burgess, respectively, and engage in a gay romance when homosexuality was illegal and criminalized in 1950s Britain.

“I’ve been lucky enough to work with a lot of important people over the years. But you think, ‘How weird is life?’ because you’ve seen that person as a musician since the age of 16, basically. [Harry Styles] is incredibly down to earth and a good guy from the North. We communicate throughout the entire process. It was very collaborative,” explains Dawson.

“You hope the person you go through this process with is someone you can fully trust and communicate with you. And I’ve had all that and more with Harry.”

Recently, Styles also made a statement about his participation in My Policeman, and did not escape some controversies. By suggesting that scenes of him will show “what is tender, loving and sensitive”, he ended up catching the attention of Jude Dry, a columnist for the IndieWire and member of the LGBT+ community.

“His comments not only revealed a lack of awareness of contemporary LGBTQ+ issues, but he also made bold claims about gay sex in films that are patently false,” commented the journalist, indicating that the singer was unfortunate in his remarks.

“It’s very absurd to think today, ‘Oh, back then you couldn’t be gay. It was illegal.’ I think everyone, including me, has their own journey to understand their sexuality, to feel more comfortable with it. It’s not a gay story about two gay guys, but a story about love and wasted time.”
