MWC 2023: Fold4 will be the opponent of Honor Magic Vs

The Samsung Galaxy Fold series is currently the only phone on the market that can be opened like a book in Europe, although several Chinese manufacturers (Oppo, Xiaomi, Honor) have already introduced competing devices on the domestic market, but they have not come to us so far. Honor Magic Vs changes this, as the brand formerly belonging to Huawei is sending the novelty to the international stage.

However, it will not be easy for them to face Samsung, even if the Korean manufacturer did not exert itself in the last year, so during the presentation, Honor emphasized the features of the Magic Vs, with which they can surpass the Fold4. The most obvious difference is to be found in the proportions of the device, the Honor device is bulkier when folded, which is why its 6.45-inch, 120 Hz, 1080 x 2560 pixel external display is more usable.

Even when opened, the display will be slightly larger, 7.9 inches, but the display is only 90 Hz (the Fold4 offers 120 Hz here as well), but its resolution of 1984 x 2272 pixels is just as much more than that of the Korean competitor. Internally, the same Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 works in both machines, but the Honor 8 also releases the Vs in a 256 GB version. On the back, the main camera is 54 megapixels (F/1.9), the zoom module delivers only 8 megapixels with three times magnification, but the sensor behind the ultra-wide lens offers a 50 megapixel resolution supported by autofocus for super close-up images.

Magic Vs clearly surpasses Samsung in terms of operating time, the 5,000 mAh battery is 20% larger, and Honor claims that because it may have to be opened less often due to the easy-to-use external display, the standby time is much longer. In addition, unlike Samsung, this product is also capable of 66-watt fast charging, which charges the battery two and a half times faster.

But there are also shortcomings. Although they said in connection with the hinge that they tried to reduce the bending crease to a minimum and that the product can withstand 400,000 openings, even this does not make it much smoother when opened than the Samsung. In addition, the solution used by Honor is not waterproof, and the device sorely lacks the possibility of wireless charging. The phone will come to European markets with Android 13 and Magic UI 7.1 on it, no specific promises were made regarding the updates. For now, we know prices in euros, domestic pricing is still being developed. At the presentation, the 12/512 GB version was priced at EUR 1,600, which may not be below HUF 700,000 in Hungary.
