JioPhone Next has Android 13 QR Code reader, even running version 12L

About to reach the public more connected to the news, Android 13 promises several new features, including already adapted for devices with larger screens (dispensing with something like Android 12L, designed especially for large panels). Because, curiously, an unsuspected phone, launched in October of last year, already brings in its interface one of the expected novelties for Google’s next system.

It’s the cheap JioPhone Next, which runs Android 12L, and received a recent update that, according to developer Mishaal Rahman, brings a QR Code scanner accessible right from the lock screen. The quick access feature is in the beta of Android 13, but this is the first time it appears in an earlier version.

Rahman suggests that there is a small chance that the Jio brand has implemented its own QR Code scanner feature. He suggests it could be that the company has backported some of the changes to the Android 13 framework, but that’s not entirely clear.

QR Codes are readily used as part of payment systems in India, which is the main market for JioPhone Next, hence the likely anticipation of this feature.

In Android 13, this new tool becomes a tile when you swipe down on the quick settings menu as part of Android 13. It is also available in the lower right corner of the lock screen for when the user wants to quickly access the scanner.
