iPhone SE 2022 vs iPhone SE 2020: what’s changing? Comparative

After two years of waiting, Apple has decided to launch a new version of iPhone SE . This one looks just like the old one. It must be said that Apple still remains on this somewhat dated iPhone 8 design, without any real visual change. The device nevertheless offers a big new feature – 5G connectivity delivered by its new Apple A15 Bionic thumb – the same super-powerful chip found in the freshly released iPhone 13s .

Beyond that, Apple has reviewed the battery capacity. But there are also many things that remain the same, including the screen and the photo sensors (notably the selfie sensor). What really justifies the price difference? In this comparison we examine point by point the differences between the two versions, and the conditions under which each of these versions could seduce you.

iPhone SE 2022 or 2020? What are the differences ?

If we put the iPhone SE 2022 and the iPhone SE 2020 side by side, you will see it very complicated if not impossible to see the slightest difference between the two smartphones.

Strictly identical design

iPhone SEs are not traditionally designed as gondola heads that push new boundaries in design, interface and functionality each time. Apple has therefore taken over for two iterations the design launched with the iPhone 8 in 2017. We therefore have very rounded edges for a better grip.

The frame of the device is also made of anodized aluminum. It should be noted that from experience the frame tends to show wear, especially when choosing a color other than white (and this is particularly true for the black model). The 2022 device is also offered in exactly the same three colors as the previous generation, namely black, white and red.

For the rest, the layout of the buttons is exactly the same. We have the ON / Off button on the right – the volume buttons, surmounted by the latch allowing to activate the silent mode are on the left. The base of the device features symmetrical grilles around the Lightning charging/data transfer port.

The screen remains the same

At the front, we are again on exactly the same design. Apple hasn’t changed its formula as all of the rest of its lineup has moved to AMOLED screens across the entire front – which means getting rid of those very thick strips at the top and bottom of the screen, as well than the Home button. The iPhone SE 2022 is the only model still in the catalog (and probably the last) to offer this old design language.

Language whose iPhone 8 released in 2017 remains the model. This lack of design change does not help at first sight to make a choice. Nevertheless, some audiences continue to appreciate this old-fashioned formula which does not upset any habits. Because the disappearance of the Home button is accompanied by a new gesture that must be learned, even if it turns out, in our opinion, to be rather intuitive.

What does the technical sheet of the iPhone SE 2022 bring, concretely?

As you can see, the technical sheet does not change much between the two smartphones. The iPhone SE 2020 embeds the A13 Bionic chip from the iPhone 11. A chip that is already very powerful since it still stands comparison with the latest Qualcomm chips in Android smartphones such as the Snapdragon 888 and Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. While the iPhone SE 2022 offers the A15 Bionic chip of the freshly released iPhone 13.

5G is yours

The main contribution of this new chip is its ability to connect to 5G antennas. The iPhone SE 2020 remain limited to 4G + connectivity, but the iPhone SE 2022 can in all situations download on mobile data with download speeds of up to 1 Gb / s.

Of course, this connectivity only makes sense if you live in an area with sufficient 5G coverage and are willing to pay extra for a 5G data plan.

Better performance

With two generations apart, it’s hard to deny the performance gap between the two iterations. Especially since in addition to switching to the A15 Bionic chip of the iPhone 13, the iPhone SE 2022 offers 4 GB of RAM instead of 3 GB. Knowing what Apple already knows how to do with very little RAM, we can s expect to encounter even fewer slowdowns which were already extremely rare, not to say non-existent, including in the most demanding applications.

On the autonomy side, we will have to wait for an independent teardown to really compare the mAh capacity of the iPhone SE 2022 battery with that of the iPhone SE 2020. Nevertheless, initial independent tests suggest a particularly balanced smartphone that holds as long in 5G as the iPhone SE 2020 in 4G. It must be said that we are moving from the 7+++ nm engraving process to the much less energy-intensive 5nm.

The photo is probably the most disappointing thing about these two smartphones. Not that it’s fundamentally bad – the main 12 Mp sensor takes very good photos. But it’s really hard to understand how Apple can still offer 7 Mp as a selfie sensor in 2022.

iPhone SE 2022 vs 2020: Is the price difference worth it?

The price of the iPhone SE 2022 starts from € 529.00, a price that may seem somewhat salty, here is why.

The current proposal price seems exaggerated

Prices for the iPhone SE 2022 lineup are as follows:

  • iPhone SE 2022 64GB: €529.00
  • iPhone SE 2022 128 GB: €579.00
  • iPhone SE 2022 256 GB: €699.00

The iPhone SE 2020 is currently on sale at various retailers at significantly lower prices:

The iPhone SE 2022 will soon be at 1 € with many packages

The iPhone SE 2020 is often offered as a 1 euro phone with certain plans. It’s a safe bet that the iPhone SE 2022 will take the same path…

Verdict: should you fall for an iPhone SE 2022 rather than an iPhone SE 2020?

Let’s not go overboard: we advise you not to go for an iPhone SE 2022 now. Its design is dated, the new features are almost non-existent apart from 5G connectivity, and much better offers exist at the same price. Without even thinking of a switch on an Android smartphone (at this price, it is possible to easily have much more upscale), the iPhone 12 mini, for example, is currently trading at around the same price.

All with a chip that remains 5G even if it has a small generation delay, an immensely superior AMOLED screen that covers the entire front face, the Face ID facial recognition system rather than Touch ID, better photo sensors on the front like at the back… Yes, this iPhone can still appeal to some users. Especially those who still don’t want to hear about the new design without a Home button with its new gestures to learn.

But beyond this audience, everything seems to indicate at this stage that the iPhone SE 2022 is preparing to become THE benchmark €1 smartphone in the coming months with certain 5G plans. At that time, it will be appropriate to reconsider this proposal which will necessarily become more interesting for the tightest budgets who swear by Apple.
