Explanations of our predictions

The iPhone models whose future is uncertain are the following: those introduced in 2017, the iPhone 8, 8 Plus, and X. However, several pieces of information suggest that we should not fear too much for the latter:

  • The list of iPhones compatible with iOS has not moved from iOS 13 to iOS 15. This means that for 3 years and over 3 major versions of iOS, Apple has not abandoned the iPhone. iOS 16 put the iPhone 6s and 7 aside, and thus triggered a kind of “new cycle”. One could imagine that iOS 17 remains compatible with the same iPhones as iOS 16 with this in mind.
  • The latest rumors at this stage validate compatibility with iOS 17 for iPhones with an A11 Bionic chip (models 8, 8 Plus, and X)

But, not everything is so simple. As we saw there, on average, an iPhone supports 4 or 5 major iOS updates. This was the case until 2019 at least. After that, Apple seems to have extended this support instead.

iPhone 8, 8 Plus, and X have already experienced iOS 11, iOS 12, iOS 13, iOS 14, iOS 15 and iOS 16. Six iOS versions in total . That’s a lot, compared to what previous Apple smartphones have shown. But it would not be surprising, if we trust this idea of support cycle triggered by iOS 16, that the models 8, 8 Plus and X can still be updated this year. Knowing that in addition, seeing an iPhone support 7 iOS updates would not be a first.

On the other hand, iOS 17 may well be the ultimate update for the trio of iPhones that appeared in 2017 .

Notice to owners of iPhone 8, 8 Plus and X, a potential end of support for iOS 17 could push you to upgrade to a more recent model?
