Huawei Mate 50 line is launched with satellite communication and Porsche edition

After having already presented teasers in recent days, Huawei has just officially launched its new Mate 50 smartphones. In addition to advanced performance components, the devices have also gained an unusual feature: support for satellite communication.

The function operates via Beidou technology, and will be available when it is not possible to use Wi-Fi, 4G or 3G connections. All devices launched have the feature, with the exception of the Mate 50E which is a more intermediate model.

Huawei Mate 50 and 50 Pro

The main devices in the line have the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 as the most important performance component. Both come with 256GB or 512GB internal storage options, but the standard model still has a 128GB variant — the amount of RAM hasn’t been detailed, but they come with at least 8GB.

Both models have 6.7-inch OLED screens and Full HD resolution, but only the Pro version supports refresh rates up to 120 Hz — the regular Huawei Mate 50 is at 90 Hz. There is also a version with Kunlun glass, which is more resistant compared to traditional panels.

The Mate 50 camera set has some distinctions between them: the base model has 50 MP, 13 MP and 12 MP sensors for the main, ultrawide and telephoto (5x optical zoom), respectively. However, the zoom component is 64 MP on the Mate 50 Pro, with 3.5x optical and up to 100x digital zoom.

The great novelty present in the set is for the variable aperture of the main camera, which can assume an imposing f/1.4 in low light environments or reach f/4 in very bright places, thus ensuring a performance closer to that found in professional cameras. This is something similar to what Samsung did a few years ago with the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S10 lines, but ended up discontinued in the following years.

Another important distinction is on the front: only the Mate 50 Pro has a 3D ToF sensor — with this, the device can still perform 3D facial recognition with greater accuracy and security. The selfie sensor is 13 MP on both smartphones.

The Pro model has a 4,700 mAh battery, larger than the Mate 50’s 4,460 mAh. Both support fast charging up to 66 W, as well as 50 W wireless charging, and reverse charging.

In addition, the devices also support Wi-Fi 6, 4G (5G not available), Bluetooth 5.2, NFC, GPS and more. The Huawei Mate 50 Pro still has a structure with IP68 resistance against water and dust.

Huawei Mate 50 RS Porsche Design

The Chinese brand will also offer a special edition in the Mate 50 line, with the RS Porsche Design model. It has a different look on the back panel, with bolder lines and distinctive design on the camera module.

The main technical differences from the Mate 50 Pro include the adoption of a 48 MP telemacro camera on the rear for up to 35x zoom, instead of the 64 MP telephoto present in the Pro version. The 50 MP and 13 MP main and ultrawide cameras remain. In addition, the device will be offered in a single version of 512 GB, while the other specifications are quite similar.

Huawei Mate 50E

The Mate 50E is aimed at users looking for a more affordable device, even if it has technical specifications that are still advanced. In this case, the phone comes with a Snapdragon 778G processor and 128GB or 256GB of internal storage.

The features of the OLED screen also include dimensions of 6.7 inches, with Full HD+ resolution and a refresh rate of 90 Hz. As with the Mate 50, 50 Pro and 50 RS Porsche Design models, the touch response frequency is set at 300 Hz.

The Huawei Mate 50E has a 50MP main camera, in line with a 13MP ultrawide. At the front, there is another 13 MP sensor, as well as a ToF 3D component. The battery is 4,460 mAh, with 66 W recharges.
