How to free up space on WhatsApp

WhatsApp has two billion users in the world. It is one of the most used messaging services and as such, where more information is shared. It is a virtual space in which not only messages but also files of all kinds are sent, particularly multimedia such as photos and videos.

If the amount of available storage on your device drops to extremely low levels, you may WhatsApp not work properly. If this happens, the platform may display a message asking the user to free up space to continue using the app.

To prevent the storage space from being completely occupied, you can use the built-in file manager on this platform. By entering there, you will not only see the available space, but you will also have access to a list with the amount of data that has been shared in each chat.

To enter the file manager in WhatsApp you have to do the following:

There you will access a list in which the chats are ordered from highest to lowest according to the amount of shared material. It is possible to go into each conversation and delete all the shared files or just some.

At the same time, there is a section where all the elements of more than 5 MB appear so that the user can review these heavy articles and, if they wish, eliminate them.

Another alternative to free up space on WhatsApp is to do it from each of the chats, on the home screen. You just have to click on the conversation in question, go to the three points that are at the top right and press where it says Group files. There you will see all the shared content, and you can delete them one by one.

Prevent files from being downloaded to cellphone

Another important point, to take care of the device’s storage, is to prevent all the files that arrive via WhatsApp from being downloaded to the cell phone.

To configure this you have to go to Settings/Chats and there deactivate the option that says Visibility of multimedia files. Because if this option is activated all the photos and videos will be downloaded to the mobile, and they will be seen in the image gallery.

It is also possible to set this setting for particular chats and not for all. This can be especially useful in those group chats where heavy content is constantly being sent.

To make use of the personalized option, you have to go to the conversation in which you want to use this tool, click on the three points in the upper margin, then on Group info/media file visibility and disable the option.

Create a .nomedia file

If you want to download the files but they do not appear in the mobile gallery, you can create a .nomedia file in the WhatsApp images folder. This will hide all photos from the app.

How is it done?

1. Download a file explorer from the Google Play Store.

2. In the file explorer, go to Pictures/WhatsApp Pictures/

3. Create a file called .nomedia

If you want to see the photos in the cell phone gallery again, you simply have to delete the .nomedia file.
