How the space hotels will work and when you can go

Companies have a very clear objective: to give space to everyone. Although the International Space Station (ISS) is beginning to receive its first civilian visitors, its facilities are devoted almost entirely to scientific research. And even the civilians sent there for the first time by Axiom Space they would have to contend with microgravity obstacles.

Therefore, there are currently two companies that want to create space hotels: Orbit Assembly Y Gateway Foundation. Both plan to provide a more comfortable space for travelers with their space hotels. Private research could be done there, but also people will be able to go on vacation. Offices would even be given to companies that want to do some activity there.

The comforts of the furnishings would make the rooms more of a resort than a research facility. But, above all, the greatest novelty is that they will provide the artificial Gravity, thanks to the shape of these strange wheels of the space hotels that are thought to be created.

First space hotel: Pioneer and Voyager

The smaller of the two types of space hotels is the Pioneera small wheel that is expected to seat 28 people, including the crew and tourists or scientists.

As for the largest wheel, called Voyager, could accommodate 300 people at a time. The tech giants that brought tourists there would be attached to the station, which would be in constant rotation.

The peculiarity of both seasons is that the artificial gravity it is closer to the parts closest to the walls, while microgravity is experienced towards the center.

To understand it you can imagine a bucket full of water. If it is turned over, of course, the water will spill out. However, if you turn it upside down while turning it very quickly, you will be able to see how the water moves towards the walls of the container, without leaving it. But the amenities would be better in the Voyager.

Pioneer it would limit artificial gravity to showers or dining rooms so guests could eat sitting down without food floating in the air. But the smallest also has the advantage of being ready much earlier.

Voyager, on the other hand, would have to wait until 2027. This is a slow process because the wheel cannot be launched all at once, but little by little. So the bigger the space hotel, the longer it will take to complete.

Second space hotel: Von Braun

aThis space hotel will have bathrooms, showers and beds similar to those experienced on Earth. They will also use centrifugal force and artificial gravity so that tourists can travel without any problem.

According to the Gateway Foundation, the start of construction work is scheduled for 2026. According to their estimates, only a year later they will be ready to receive human guests.

It also claims to have rooms and amenities like those of any other tourist facility. You may have, as expected, 280 guests with luxury facilities, such as a gym, individual villas, Gourmet restaurants, bars and entertainment centers. Arguably, this is a high-end off-Earth experience.

Today, it is already possible to reserve a place in the first space hotel. The cost for the entire trip is appraised at 5 million dollars, for a stay of three and a half days. Indeed: it will be an experience reserved, for now, for the most eccentric elite members.

The health emergency generated by the pandemic delayed the plans, so the opening is expected for 2028.

The hotel will have all the comforts of a cruise ship, but with an incredible view, assure its future builders (Gateway Foundation)
