‘Guardians of the Galaxy 3’ fumigates the billboard: 17 premieres pushed to the following weekend

It is a situation that is becoming more and more evident: wherever a blockbuster is released, no other grass is allowed to grow. Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 3, the new blockbuster Marvel Studios, arrives today at 365 Spanish cinemas. That means that wherever you go, you can surely see it. But if you are not interested in knowing Cosmo the space dog or the future of Star-Lord and company, bad news.

As usually happens every time a title considered a mega-event is released, the Spanish billboard withdraws and the distributors try to separate their own bets from that same weekend to avoid being swept away by the blockbuster tsunami. This way of acting may seem common, but after the pandemic has been exacerbated.

In recent times we have seen how it happened with Spider-Man: No Way Home, Avatar: The Water Sense or the recent Super Mario Bros: The Movie. The multiplexes with the most commercial programming turn to the title that they know is going to feed them the most at the box office and they dedicate almost all their rooms to schedule several screenings of the same title. The rest of the films are left without much of a choice.

The Guardians Competition

Although in our country Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 3 opened on Thursday to scratch another day off its first weekend gross globally, some releases have stoically endured their arrival in theaters this weekend.

Are siege (thriller of Miguel Angel Vivas made by Natalia de Molina), my crime (criminal account of François Ozon with Nadia Tereszkiewicz and Isabelle Huppert), The Lost King (historical drama of Stephen Frears with sally hawkins and Steve Cogan), the bad family (documentation of Nacho A. Villar and Louis Red), The trio in E flat (Portuguese drama Rita Azevedo Gomes adapting a play by Rohmer), the good companies (drama directed by Silvia Munt) and Unzue. Juancar’s last team (documentary about the Barça goalkeeper and coach).

Spanish, European, auteur and documentary films. Are seven premieres highly aimed at another type of public that it is not a priority to go to see Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 3 the same weekend of its premiere. The growing specialization of movie theaters for their survival will lead to these titles feeding the billboards of the specialized circuit and VO; not to mention those who will only have testimonial steps on the big screen.

The next morning

The true effect of the tsunami Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 3 (or the megafranchise that touches at all times) shows up the following weekend. Here it is not so much what is decided to release against the film that matters, but what has been saved, since some films scheduled for May 5 have delayed their release by a week. Until we meet the a staggering 17 premieres scheduled for the next week.

the eternal daughter (the new of Joanna Hogg with Tilda Swinton), Dialogue with life (the new of Christophe HonorĂ© with vincent lacoste and Juliette Binoche), Marlowe (detective story with Liam Neeson directed by Neil Jordan), the bounty hunter (western of Walter Hill with Christopher Waltz and Willem Dafoe), love again (romantic comedy starring Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Sam Heughan), Book Club – Now Italy (sequel starring diane keaton and Jane Fonda), Jeepers Creepers: Reborn (new installment of the horror saga), De humani corporis fabrica (anatomical-sensory documentary of Lucien Castaing-Taylor and Verena Paravel), The stillness in the storm (drama with Loreto MauleĂ³n), white girl (Chilean drama Fernando Guzzoni), Our children (Brazilian drama directed by Maria de Medeiros), slasher (Spanish horror comedy), The match of the century (Russian sports drama), the last fight (documentary about bullfighting), the documentary Mother Teresa: There is no greater love and a couple of children’s animation titles: Patti and the fury of poseidon and The little Adam alien incident.

Undoubtedly, this overdose of premieres is also due to the pull effect of the Film Festival, which will be held from May 15 to 18. However, the fact that the Marvel movie coincides with those days of cheap tickets also will unite the bulk of the public around it. In this case, the distributors trust that the greater influx to the cinemas will benefit their titles when the Guardians theaters are full… the problem comes if the exhibition strategy consists of multiplying their screens leaving hardly any space for the rest of proposals.

How many of them will hold out on the bill until the following week? It will be a fierce fight, since 11 more premieres arrive on May 19… and one of them is Fast & Furious X.
