Google will say goodbye to the Pixel 3a

While Apple still supports iPhones released in 2015, the majority of older Android smartphones become obsolete rather quickly. The Google Pixel 3a, for example, which hit the market in May 2019, is only supported for three years.

So, if you have a Pixel 3a or a Pixel 3a XL, it’s already time to get rid of it to buy a new model. Indeed, Google is about to stop supporting these devices, which means that they will no longer receive updates. And it will pose a risk to your data security.

Pixel 3a: last update in July

According to Google’s support page, the Pixel 3a should have received its last security update this May. But eventually, this will be extended to July 2022.

“In May 2019, when we launched the Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL, we announced that the devices would receive three years of software updates and three years of security updates from when our devices first became available. devices on the Google Store. The final update for Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL will be rolling out to users by July 2022”says a representative of Google, quoted by our colleagues from 9to5Google.

Google has already improved its support system so that we can keep our new smartphones longer

After this latest update, users of these devices will be better off buying newer models. As a reminder, the latest smartphones from Google are the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. But normally, Google should also release an affordable version, the Pixel 6a, in a few days at its I/O conference.

And fortunately, Google has improved significantly when it comes to supporting its devices. Indeed, the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro will be supported much longer.

According to Google’s support page, these two devices will receive new versions of Android until October 2024. Then, they will continue to receive security updates until October 2026.

Apart from the fact that users won’t have to get rid of their smartphones for quite a while, it’s also a gesture for the planet. Indeed, extending the life of a smartphone saves natural resources.

On the other hand, Google has recently made significant progress in repairability. Like Apple and Samsung, the Mountain View company has launched a program allowing its customers to repair their smartphones themselves. To develop this program, which provides access to tools and spare parts, Google worked with iFixit.

“The full range of repair parts for common Pixel phone repairs – items such as batteries, replacement screens, cameras and more – will be available individually or in iFixit repair kits, which include tools such as screwdriver bits and spudgers”explained Ana Corrales, Chief Operating Officer, Consumer Hardware, at Google.

Samsung, the world’s number one, has also improved

Remember also that like Google, Samsung recently decided to extend support for some of its models. The Korean giant has indeed committed to updating some devices to four new versions of Android. Others will receive security updates for five years.

“We work hard to bring innovative and sustainable mobile experiences to our Galaxy users. And many of our customers choose to keep their devices longer, whether they love their specific smartphone model or want to contribute to a more sustainable world.”explained Davy Moons, Mobile Marketing Manager at Samsung Belgium. “Today, we’re taking our commitment to innovation even further by delivering up to four generations of One UI upgrades, so our users can enjoy the best possible mobile experience for longer.” . »
