Google may move up to a fifth of its phone production to India

The newspaper says that if Google succeeds in finding a suitable partner in India after the request for proposals, between 500,000 and 1 million Pixel smartphones can be produced in India. This represents between 10 and 20 percent of the estimated annual production of Pixel smartphones. So far, there is no agreement and a new manufacturing partner is certain, Google only asked for an offer for the mentioned number of phones.

Until now, Google has manufactured the Pixel 4a and Pixel 5 outside of China, they were made in Vietnam. The Pixel 6s and the new, soon-to-be-coming Pixel 7s are also manufactured in China, but according to the report, some parts are delayed due to quarantines and closures ordered in the country due to Covid-19. In addition to avoiding these, Google could also increase its local sales by manufacturing in India, because in India lower taxes must be paid for locally manufactured smartphones. Google officially entered the Indian market with the Pixel 6a, and so far around 100,000 units of the phone have been sold in the country with more than one billion inhabitants. The Pixel 6 and 6a show a stable increase in sales globally compared to their predecessors, the success is mainly due to the Pixel 6.
