Goodbye to cookies: Privacy Sandbox comes to Android to make it harder to track you on the web

Google has officially announced the arrival of Privacy Sandbox on Android. To date, it was in the testing phase within the Google Chrome options. By implementing this feature in Chrome outside of the first phase of testing, Google seeks to dispense with the usual cookie system and use a new, more anonymous system through a new API called ‘Topics’.

In other words, they continue with the intention of ending cookies, and will now handle user data through a system of anonymous virtual labels made up of the information of thousands of other users.

Privacy Sandbox comes to Android apps

According to Google, Privacy Sandbox is “a multi-year initiative” that aims to “introduce new, more privacy-friendly advertising solutions.” Privacy Sandbox will not have personal browsing identifiers , but will work through a system of “topics” or anonymous labels.

“These solutions will limit access to user data with third parties and will operate without identifiers between applications, including advertising IDs. We are also exploring technologies that reduce the possibility of covert data collection and more secure ways to integrate the apps in ad app development kits.”

Privacy Sandbox has been developed, on paper, to prevent tracking by websites and thus improve online security. Similarly, Privacy Sandbox will work in Android apps themselves, not just Chrome.

To do this, in the final version, they have dispensed with the controversial FLoC system (federated learning) and now use an API based on ‘topics’ , topics of interest that are categorized according to browsing.

Our browser will collect information to determine the topics that interest us based on our browsing history , information combined with that of multiple users. Google ensures that these ‘topics’ are only maintained for three weeks, and are removed after this time. When we visit a web page, the API picks three themes and shares them with the website and its advertising partners.

“The goal of Privacy Sandbox on Android is to develop effective and more privacy-friendly advertising solutions. Users must be assured that they are not being systematically tracked, and at the same time, developers and companies must have the necessary tools to in the mobile world. During the design, construction and testing phases of these new solutions, we plan to support advertising IDs for at least two years. And, of course, we will provide adequate notice of any future changes.”
