Samsung or Motorola, which manufacturer offers the best entry-level phones? To help answer this question, we have one more clash between two basics of these brands. This time we put the Galaxy A03 to face the Moto G20. Who will emerge victorious? That’s what we’re going to find out now.

Design and connectivity

In terms of design, we have a very similar look when looking at it from the front. There is a teardrop notch and a wide border below the display. At the rear, we have a more squared camera block on the A03 and a matte texture with small lines that intersect. Samsung also decided to bet on bigger holes for lenses, something that ends up reminiscent of iphones.

The Moto G20 also has a matte finish, but not textured. It was launched in Europe in blue, graphite and pink colors, while the Korean rival can be found in shades of black, blue and red.The G20 has a biometric reader integrated with the classic Motorola logo on the back. Samsung, on the other hand, decided to skimp on the Galaxy A03 and you’ll only have facial biometrics as an option. Another blunder from Samsung is that its basic still has a micro USB input, unlike the most current in the rival’s C standard.

In terms of connectivity, they are tied: both have Wi-Fi AC to support 5 GHz networks and Bluetooth 5.0. None support NFC.

We start with a dot for Motorola.

Screen

Which has the best screen? Both feature a 6.5-inch LCD panel and HD resolution. The difference is in the refresh rate, being 90 Hz on the G20 and only 60 Hz on the A03. On the other hand, Samsung’s display has slightly stronger brightness and better color calibration.

There is a good viewing angle on both sides, as well as a lack of HDR support for videos on YouTube and social networks. Overall, the experience is pretty close, but with the advantage of the G20 offering greater fluidity in animations.

So, one more point for Motorola.

Sound

There is only one sound output, and with that we have mono audio on both. None come to thrill in power and sound quality. Both the G20 and the Galaxy A03 exaggerate the treble and the sound is distorted when the volume is at maximum. This not only compromises the sound experience with movies, but with music especially.

Motorola’s basics come with a headphone jack in the box, which helps to offset this limitation. While Samsung has been saving on accessories and doesn’t send a phone in the box.

One more point for Motorola.

Both were released with Android 11. Samsung is expected to release the Android 12 update soon for the Galaxy A03, while Motorola does not give any sign that its basics will be updated as well.

The Galaxy has more feature-packed software, but it stutters a little more than its rival. The G20’s 90 Hz display also helps deliver a superior feeling of fluidity with system animations at 90 fps.

In this way, we will give one point to each.

Motorola Moto G20

Which delivers the best performance? Both brands decided to bet on Unisoc hardware, the difference is that in the Galaxy we have the T606 and in the Motorola a slightly more powerful model: the T700.

In theory the G20’s processor is faster, but in our speed test the difference was minimal between the two. In benchmarks the story is a little different and we see Motorola’s basics conquer numbers up to 25% higher. And in games? None get to excite in more demanding games, but the A03 tends to heat up more.

So, we give Motorola one more point.

Both have a 5,000 mAh battery and the difference in autonomy is quite small, with a slight advantage for the Galaxy A03. Anyway, both deliver enough autonomy for more than a day of use with tranquility.

In terms of charging time, Samsung also takes advantage, even if its charger is weaker. You’ll need to wait less to get the A03’s battery full.

Point for the Galaxy A03.

cameras

In the photographic part, it seems that Motorola has the advantage, at least in terms of quantity. There are four cameras on the G20 versus two on the back of the Galaxy A03. Both bet on a 48 MP sensor, but Motorola has also included an ultra-wide and another dedicated for macros, while Samsung only has the background blur as an extra.

None surprises in photos and this was already expected from entry-level devices. The Motorola has an advantage in daytime photos with HDR enabled, while the Galaxy is a little better at night with the use of night mode.

The G20’s ultra-wide gives you greater flexibility when you need to frame something big, despite the lower quality of photos. The macro would be a nice extra, but the low resolution sensor limits it a lot. The blur effect is a little better on the Galaxy.

We’ll give each one a point.

Photos captured with Galaxy A03

We have a 13 MP front camera on the Motorola and only 5 MP on the Galaxy. In theory it seems that the G20 has the upper hand, but it’s not that simple. Daytime selfies we see similar quality, however the Motorola one disables HDR when portrait mode is used and with that it will have a blown background. At night it is the Galaxy that has a slight advantage, despite the excess of noise it does not capture selfies with distorted colors as in the rival.

Thus, we give point to Galaxy A03.

Price

The Moto G20 was launched in Brazil in May 2021 for R$ 1,700 and is currently found for just over R$ 1,000. The Galaxy A03 arrived in February 2022 for BRL 1,300 and is currently available in offers for less than BRL 1,000.

So, if you only care about what’s cheaper, it’s the Samsung basics you should choose.

Conclusion

The Moto G20 ended up winning our comparison. If you’re looking for the best of both, then it’s the Motorola basics to go for. It has a biometric reader, USB-C port, 90 Hz screen, better system performance, and ultra-wide camera, in addition to more agile focus on the camcorder.

Now if you only care about the cheapest, you’ll like the Galaxy for having more feature-packed software, longer battery life, better night and blur mode, as well as better night selfies.
