On the morning of this Wednesday (10), Samsung opened the curtains to present its new generation of folding cell phones — here is the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4. TechMarkup published the hands-on video of the models highlighting their news and , just below, you can check the full size comparison of these devices with rivals.
The foldable cell phone market has grown significantly in the last year, and unimpressively, with solid leadership from Samsung, but it is worth noting the presence of other renowned models of the current generation that are available abroad, such as the Huawei Mate Xs 2, Huawei P50 Pocket, OPPO Find N and Xiaomi Mi Mix Fold.
What aspects make Samsung lead this market, even when there are more affordable models, such as the Motorola Razr 5G? You can discover the advantages and disadvantages of the main models in the following comparison. Check out!
Samsung chose not to make major changes to the look of the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Z Flip 4, but small improvements made the more expensive model lighter and more compact, with the aspect ratio changed from 24.5:9 to 23:9. . The “flip” model, in turn, became more resistant and started to withstand more openings and closings without damage.
The South Korean invests heavily in resistant mechanisms for the folding of its cell phones, but the crease of the screen is still noticeable in both models. In terms of multimedia experience, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 stands out for offering an under-screen camera even less noticeable than its predecessor, ensuring the best use of area among rivals.
In addition, the “Z” line foldables are the last in the world to be rated IPX8, attesting to their maximum water resistance, but they still suffer from dust, so it is not advisable to take these devices to the beach and other sandy environments.
The most advanced display is also on behalf of Samsung — the Dynamic AMOLED 2X stands out for reducing the amount of blue light emitted while increasing brightness and contrast. Among the horizontal fold models, Xiaomi’s phone is the largest and has a resolution above Quad HD; in vertical fold, the “giant” is the P50 Pocket.
Another interesting factor on the Huawei side is that the Mate Xs 2 is equipped with a screen that folds “outwards”, extending to its rear and forming a phone with two opposing screens, so there is no separate external display.
Motorola brings a proposal closer to the mid-range cellphone segment, since its screen of only 6.2 inches offers a refresh rate of only 90 Hz. Its external display, on the other hand, is larger and sharper than the panel of rivals Samsung and Huawei.
The leap in performance and efficiency between the Snapdragon 888 and the 8 Plus Gen 1 is undeniable. Samsung’s new foldables jumped two versions of Qualcomm’s most advanced processor to deliver the latest and most powerful platform on the market, making the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 the fastest in the comparison.
In any case, the Chinese do not disappoint with the Snapdragon 888 that, with options of up to 12 GB of RAM on Xiaomi, smooth multitasking is guaranteed. Unfortunately, the same cannot be highlighted in the Razr 5G, which uses the “tired” Snapdragon 765G, but Motorola is already preparing the successor of the model with Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1.
In terms of battery, the Mi Mix Fold is the winner with a capacity of 5,020 mAh. Samsung has increased the battery size of the Galaxy Z Flip 4 this generation, allowing it to offer more autonomy than its predecessor. In this field, Motorola again disappoints with the Razr 5G with a battery of only 2,800 mAh.
Huawei still suffers from US trade sanctions and is prevented from delivering 5G connectivity to its phones.
The Galaxy Z Fold 4 uses the same 50MP sensor as the Galaxy S22, plus a 12MP no-change ultrawide camera and a new 10MP telephoto lens that has evolved to deliver 3x optical zoom. Its under-screen camera of just 4 MP should capture sharper images with the display’s new sub-pixel technology.
The “flip” model, in turn, did not receive direct improvements, but with new software features and a faster chip, it is possible that the captured images will have better quality. The Huawei P50 Pro, against this model, has the advantage of having a 32 MP “ultraspectrum” auxiliary camera that guarantees better images in high-contrast scenes.
The OPPO Find N also deserves to be highlighted for using a triple set that adopts a telephoto lens, but with only 2x optical zoom. One more point for the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Mi Mix Fold, which is also capable of zooming in up to 3x.
The Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Flip 4 reiterate why Samsung dominates the foldable phone market. The South Korean makes large investments that other manufacturers prefer to direct to their flagship devices in view of the still growing niche, but that does not mean that the market leader is free from competition – see Mix Fold 2 and Razr 2022.
The most affordable among the “Galaxy Z” family releases is the Flip 4, which has a suggested price of US$999 (about R$5,059), but we can expect a much higher range when the company announces the availability of the devices in the Europe. Currently, models of the predecessor generation are found at more attractive prices.
