Four OAS proposals to promote cybersecurity

There is a shortage of professionals dedicated to this area who can cover the needs of the companies that require their services.

A report developed by the General Secretariat of the Organization of American States (OAS) and Cisco, a company dedicated to telecommunications, collected data on a problem of lack of professionals in the cybersecurity sector in Latin America.

The document, called “Development of the Workforce of cybersecurity in the era of scarcity of talent and skills”, indicated that in the current context of labor supply and people specialized in cyber security in the region were not similar and, therefore, there is a shortage of professionals dedicated to this area that can cover the needs of the companies that require their services.

That is why the OAS, together with the company, pointed out four proposals to solve this problem and promote that more people belonging to the interested parties carry out actions in this regard. Among them are indicated:

– Education in digital themes for children and young people, so that they are familiar with basic topics related to the virtual world and its profits.

– Access to training programs that include some type of specialized foundation in cyber security.

– Clarity in the roles and responsibilities to develop the workforce required in a context of increasing jobs cyber risks generated by the violation of privacy.

– The creation and implementation of national strategies and action plans by governments as basis key to promoting the development of talent in cybersecurity as part of the national agendas in the countries of Latin America.

However, in addition to proposing these solutions, they indicate that the labor market related to cyber security has problems due to three sources of problems, which are:

– From the supply side, to investigate the reasons why there are not enough vocations in cybersecurity and that have to do with the lack of information and that what exists is, at times, confusing and contradictory.

– From the demand side, to delve into how organizations both public and private can reduce their staffing needs by, for example, investing in the retraining of their staff workers.

– From the perspective of governments, which are responsible for launching initiatives that boost the labor market in cybersecurity based on the inclusion of specific initiatives within their national strategies and regulatory frameworks.

During the presentation of the report, the Executive Secretary of the Inter-American Committee against Terrorism of the OAS, allison Treppel, indicated that this document will contribute to the “strengthening of cybersecurity capabilities of the region at a time when Latin America and the Caribbean appear to be a priority target for cybercriminals.”

The representative of International organization He also indicated that “all stakeholders must work together to address the challenges and challenges collaboratively with the aim of offering achievable and sustainable solutions”

Cybersecurity is a necessity not only for companies, but also for governments.

For his part, Mario de la Cruz, Senior Director of Government Affairs for Cisco Latin America, stated that “the capabilities, tools and opportunities what’s wrong with it Latin America to consolidate their economic growth, seek to reduce gaps and create inclusion, they inexorably go through the digital transformation”.
