Find X5 review: OPPO closer to the stars

As tradition dictates, OPPO has chosen the month of March to unveil its new high-end smartphones. If the Find X5 Pro is much talked about , its little brother the Find X5 does not have to be ashamed of its talents.

The Find X5 is already available at a price of 1000 euros. It is available in two colors (black and white) and in a single capacity (8/256 GB).

The Find X5 therefore costs 300 euros less than the Pro version. And yet, you will see, OPPO has not made so many technical sacrifices.

physics matters

Julien Clobus, marketing and communication director at OPPO France told us in an interview that OPPO’s product strategy was based on three pillars: innovation, sustainability and… design. Regardless of the price positioning of its smartphones, the manufacturer always strives to take care of their aesthetics. The Find X5 is the perfect embodiment of this.

If the model has a ceramic unibody shell, the Find X5 inherits a glass dress and a metal frame. The choice of these more classic materials as well as the manufacturing process (better mastered after years of practice) allow OPPO to offer a resolutely premium smartphone.

The manufacturer always makes it a point of honor to offer something different. Here we can mention the matte coating with a delicate touch. We could also illustrate this know-how with the black photo module (on the white dress) whose the lower edge takes an angle of 75° in order to wedge his index finger when grasping the smartphone with one hand.

We have to admit, OPPO has an eye for detail. The famous, the one that has long made the success of Apple, Samsung and then Huawei. In terms of design, the Find X5 has something to make the competition blush. From the Xiaomi 12 Pro (a little bland) to the Galaxy S22+ via the iPhone 13 (all positioned at the same price), none manages to make us forget the OPPO model (which is a rather good sign).

But aesthetics being above all a matter of taste, let’s focus on more objective aspects. The Find X5 is first light (196 g on the scale) and displays contained dimensions. Its more elongated format makes it easier to grip, so handling the Find X5 on a daily basis is a real pleasure.

At the front, the integration of the curved screen is impeccable, the fingerprint reader under the screen is responsive and the punch in the upper left corner remains discreet. Everything is IP54 certified and exudes solidity. An almost faultless since an IP68 certification at this price level would not have been too much.

Full the peepers!

In order to offer a premium experience across its entire range, OPPO makes very few sacrifices on the screen side. Like the Find X5 Pro, the Find X5 comes with a 10-bit AMOLED panel with a refresh rate of 120 Hz. Smaller (6.55” compared to 6.7” for the Pro) the screen also has a less precise definition (Full HD+ compared to QHD+) but above all LTPS and not LTPO technology, which consumes slightly more energy .

These small concessions above all allow OPPO to move upmarket rather than contain costs. On a smartphone at 1000 euros, we are entitled to demand a QHD + definition or LTPO technology.

We admit it, we are looking for the little beast here. A normal human being is not able to distinguish with the naked eye the difference between a QHD+ and Full HD+ definition. Also the Find X5 screen is just as attractive as that of its big brother.

very fluid, it shines with its excellent luminosity and its calibration close to perfection. We “scroll” on social networks not without a certain pleasure, watching a video is a very comfortable experience and playing the latest games of the moment is a real pleasure. In summary, we take full advantage of it.

Efficient and enduring

The major difference between the Find X5 and the Pro version lies in the choice of chip. While the most premium model features the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, the Find X5 must be “satisfied” with a Snapdragon 888 which powered the premium smartphones of 2021.

The choice of a one-year-old component allows OPPO to reduce costs, and therefore the final price, while maintaining a high level of performance.

Because if the Snapdragon 888 does not compare with the new generation on the benchmarks, it does not feel at all in use. All apps run smoothly, transitions are fast, multitasking is smooth, and the best games are running at the highest graphics settings.

The Snapdragon 888 also has the advantage of not heating up (in any case the manufacturers seem to have better control over heat dissipation), all with correct energy consumption.

In any case, this is what we conclude after several days of testing. On average the Find X5 was able to accompany us for a good day with a full charge for intensive use. We can therefore evaluate the autonomy at a day and a half on average for standard use and up to two days by abusing the energy saving modes.

These performances therefore place the Find X5 in the middle on this criterion, but it remains far from references such as the iPhone 13 Pro Max and its two and a half days of autonomy. To compensate, OPPO provides an ultra-fast charger. And what a charger!

Usain VOOC

From the Find X5 Pro, the standard version recovers the charging technology SuperVOOC 80W promising record charging times.

In just 10 minutes, the Find X5’s battery regains 50% of its capacity. Count less than 30 minutes for a full charge, enough time for a shower and a coffee. So you can afford to forget to charge it at night.

If OPPO does not make any sacrifice on wired charging, it reduces the airfoil in terms of wireless charging. The Find X5 is fine compatible with AirVOOC but the power is reduced to 30 W (compared to 50 W for the Pro model).

Not to be offended either since the Find X5 regains all its energy in an hour. To top it off, reverse charging is also on the program.

Such charging times worry as much as they impress. Some users fear that the battery degrades more quickly because of the intensity of the charges.

be calm, SuperVOOC and AirVOOC were designed to avoid this. The charging pad and cable contain several chips to control charging and temperature.

Signature Hasselblad

As with the rest of the technical sheet, OPPO makes some hardware concessions on the photo part. If it also has a triple sensor, the Find X5 relies on slightly less advanced components. The main 50 Mpxl sensor is stabilized on 2 axes and not 5, the wide-angle lens aperture is smaller (f/1.8 vs. f/1.7), and the second 50MP sensor comes with an ultra-wide-angle lens that lacks Freeform lenses . Only the telephoto lens (f / 2.4 – 2x optical zoom) with 13 Mpxl sensor is in all respects identical to that of the Find X5 Pro.

At the front, the 32 Mpxl sensor must do without the Adaptive angle which allows the smartphone to adapt the field of vision according to the number of people in the selfie.

The rest is the same. The Find X5 takes advantage of the partnership between OPPO and Hasselblad, it also includes all the features developed by the photo giant’s engineers, which were widely analyzed in our Find X5 Pro test. Above all, OPPO has equipped it with its in-house MariSilicon X chip whose sole objective is to optimize image processing.

Result, in good light conditions, it is difficult to see big differences between the photos shot with the Find X5 or the Find X5 Pro. Ditto for portraits or macro photos. The better stabilization of the Find X5 Pro’s main sensor, on the other hand, allows it to shine more in low light, a significant point for photography enthusiasts.

What else ? Not much actually. By integrating the same chip for image processing and applying the same Hasselblad touch, OPPO maintains very good photo quality on its Find X5.

It’s the least you can say for a smartphone at 1000 euros. It’s true, but the competition creates a bigger gap between the Pro/Ultra versions and the “standard” models, most often by removing a sensor. None of that here. And even if the Find X5 Pro has that little extra something that makes it a photography reference, the Find X5 does not have to be ashamed of its talents. Quite the contrary.

The choice between the Find X5 and the Find X5 Pro will mainly be a matter of budget. In absolute terms, both smartphones offer a premium experience. But OPPO has concentrated its latest innovations in the Pro model.

From the ceramic design requiring hundreds of hours of manufacturing to the more advanced screen or the slightly more advanced camera, the Find X5 Pro is technically better than its brother.

However, the 300 euros difference obliges us to clearly target our needs. If having a very good camera but not the best is enough for you, then the Find X5 is highly recommended. If a QHD definition does not seem necessary to you, then the Find X5 screen will give you complete satisfaction.

The strength of the Find X5 is that it has the main strengths of the Find X5 Pro and gets rid of what many will consider superfluous. According to U.S, the Find X5 is one of the best techno-price ratio in the premium segment.

Our opinion on the Find X5

In the shadow of the Pro version, the Find X5 is a very nice surprise. OPPO manages to strike the right balance by shedding this version of what many consumers will consider gimmicky.

Thus, the Find X5 is distinguished by its resolutely premium design, its very beautiful screen, its excellent performance, its ultra-fast charging system as well as its very good camera marked with the Hasselblad seal.

We regret a fair autonomy as well as the availability of a single storage capacity and an IP54 certification. But in the large family of smartphones at 1000 euros, the Find X5 manages to hold its own, and even to make people forget excellent references like the iPhone 13 or the Galaxy S22+. A great feat.
