Facebook’s parent company Meta is reinstating the former president’s personal Facebook and Instagram accounts donald trump after two years of suspension following the violent assault on the US Capitol on January 6, 2021.
“The public has to be able to hear what politicians are saying in order to make decisions,” said Nick Clegg, Meta’s head of international affairs.
In addition, the company noted in a blog post on Wednesday that it is adding “new guardrails” or limits to its updated policy to ensure that no “repeat offenders” violate its rules.
“In the event that Mr. Trump posts further infringing content, the content will be removed and he will be suspended for anywhere from one month to two years, depending on the severity of the infringement.”said Meta, which is based in Menlo Park, California.
In the statement, he also explained that he suspended Trump’s accounts two years ago due to “extreme and highly unusual circumstances.”
Trump disputed the ad of the company in a post on his own site, Truth Social. “FACEBOOK, which has lost billions of dollars in value since it ‘deplored’ its favorite president, me, has just announced that it is reinstating my account. Such a thing should never happen again to a sitting President, or to anyone who doesn’t deserve pay!” he wrote.
The former president was suspended from Instagram and Facebook on January 7, one day after his followers’ deadly uprising in Washington DC in 2021. Other social media companies also kicked him off their platforms, though was recently reinstated on Twitter after Elon Musk took over the company. Trump hasn’t tweeted yet.
Banned from major social networks, the former president has been relying on his own site, TruthSocialwhich he released after being blocked from Twitter.
